Hugo didn't understand why only his stepbrothers got to have fun while he did all the work around the house. He wished he could end his plight, and he wondered if Princess Sophina would be interested in his arrogant stepbrothers.
When Hugo wasn't looking, there was a flash of light behind him, but he was so depressed that he didn't even notice. Behind Hugo was a handsome man who was dressed in a handsome tuxedo. He went up to Hugo and rubbed his back.
"Oh, there's nothing left to believe in," Hugo sighed.
"Nothing, champ?" asked the man. "Oh, you don't mean that."
"Oh, but I do," Hugo protested.
"Nonsense, my boy," the man chided him. "If you'd lost all your faith, then I couldn't be here—and here I am."
Hugo turned around and was surprised. "Who are you?" he asked.
"Your Fairy Godfather," said the nice man. "You really shouldn't be here when you have a magnificent talent to pursue."
"Oh, but Stepfather won't even let me ice-dance," Hugo sighed.
"Then he was wrong to do this to you," Fairy Godfather frowned. "You deserve to ice-dance, and you are going to that ice-dancing ball. Now let's start with a nice coach to take you to the palace."
"Well, there's a pile of wood inside the shed," Hugo said. "Stepfather was thinking of getting me to build something with it."
Hugo and Fairy Godfather went to the shed to find a pile of wood. Hugo brought the wood outside.
"Okay, champ, stand back," Fairy Godfather instructed.
With his bare hands, Fairy Godfather magically turned the pile of wood into a magnificent coach. Hugo could barely believe his eyes.
"This coach is going to need a little something," Fairy Godfather said.
"We can harness the horses to the coach," suggested Hugo.
Hugo brought out a few horses, and Fairy Godfather magically harnessed the horses to the coach. He also turned a squirrel into a coachman and a bird into a footman.
"That just about does it, but I feel like I forgot something," Fairy Godfather said.
Fairy Godfather turned to Hugo, who wasn't even dressed properly for the ice-dancing ball.
"Good heavens, champ!" Fairy Godfather gasped. "You can't go to the ball looking like that. Hold still—this may tickle."
Fairy Godfather surrounded Hugo with a light of sparkle. The sparkly magic tickled so much that it made Hugo twitch. When the light faded away, Hugo was wearing a stunningly handsome blue tuxedo.
"Wow, this is perfect," Hugo gaped.
"You just need one more thing," Fairy Godfather said.
Just like that, a pair of black skates appeared in Fairy Godfather's hand, and he handed them to Hugo.
"Black skates?" Hugo asked.
"Yes, and they're very comfortable," Fairy Godfather said. "Oh, and there's something you need to know, champ. You have only until midnight. When the clock strikes 12, the spell will be broken, and everything will be as it was before."
Hugo was disappointed that he had to leave before midnight, but he was happy he was going to ice-dance again. "Okay, I'll remember," he said. "Thank you."
"Bless you, my boy," Fairy Godfather smiled, hugging his fairy godson. "Now you'd better get going."
Hugo got into the coach, and away he went to the palace.
