Prologue
Strangers

Rivera Nigh

Middle school was over.

It was summer on the Fourth of July. I was invited to a party at a beach house with my friends. Parents were off at their own individual party getting drunk like horny teenagers. People filled the beach house inside and out. High school teenagers roamed the place with booze in the placed of their palms. The middle school graduates were grouped together doing their own thing and making their own troubles.

So many people were showing off their skin; I felt out of place wearing skinny jeans and a long sleeve tee-shirt. As I was trying to find a place to isolate myself, I regretted opening some doors. My so called 'friends' invited me, but they have all scattered with their significant others leaving me to roam the endless rooms.

In hours end, I came across the library only to find couples humping and sticking their tongues into one another's mouths. After all the previews I had seen, it was no longer surprising. However, being in the presence of another's sexual activity still made me feel uneasy. I climbed up the spiral stairs to the higher ground of the library to find a skinny boy with curly hair and dorky glasses with braces. He was reading a book on human behaviors.

I know this person... Anubis Malik- the smartest kid in school. He was always alone, always a bookworm. People can usually find him having his ear buds in and his eyes skimming through pages. He never showed up for a yearbook picture or awards day. People have always teased and bullied him for his brain and his appearance. I never thought he was socially awkward; to me, he always seemed listless of people as he gave most of them the cold shoulders- but then why was he into psychology? Maybe he liked to think how moronic most of us are compared to him. I wouldn't blame him if he did, society is filled with stupidity that I cannot decipher.

"Hey," I said gently. He spent a moment to finish his paragraph to drag his eyes away from the pages and looked at me. "Doesn't this bother you?" I ask pointing my thumb at the couple who were making the couch scream.

He starred at me with a blank for five seconds then asked, "Should it?"

I didn't know how to respond. It irritates me when people answer a question with a question. It's so indirect, and it doesn't answer the question. "Well -I mean -it doesn't make you feel awkward?" I muttered. I sat down on the couch in front of him.

"It's natural. We are animals after all." He stared at me with a blank expression, waiting for a reply. I sank back into the cushioning of the sofa and slowly crossed my arms. My eyes glared out at the balcony. Black engulf the orange sky until there was only darkness. It was then the sparks flied, illuminating a world that I could not see. It was loud -loud enough so I couldn't  hear the screaming of the couch and bright enough to let my guard down. My stiff mad face loosened at the sight of the lights in a place so dark. I unfolded my arms to take in the sight. For a moment I forgot what I have seen today and lost the irritated feelings of life.

I took one glance at Anubis and all those things came flooding back, pulling me back down to reality. He continues with his reading. Irritated I asked, "Hey Anubis, why are you always so listless?"

He looked at me for a moment then quickly darted his eyes out the balcony. He signed and looked back at me. "Why are you so curious Nigh?"

I was shocked. He knew my name. I felt flustered and kind of mad of his sassy attitude. Slowly I began raising my voice in anger. "Hey! Look, I am only trying to be friendly here and make a conversation, okay, Malik? What is it with you and people? Do you think you are superior or something? Well guess what, you are not God and society does not treat you like one either!" After I split all of that out, I realize I snapped. But why?

Anubis smiled leaning the side of his head on his right fist, and all of a sudden I was scared. "So you don't use contractions when you are mad. Intriguing." I was confused for a moment. I have never realized this part of me. "To answer your question, yes I do think I'm superior, but I do not think I am God or that people should treat me like one. Nor do I believe in God."

"You still haven't answered my question; why are you so curious?" He continued.

"You still haven't answered my question, this doesn't bother you?" I pointing my thumb at the downstairs coach.

He looked to his right and gave out a small chuckle. I had never seen such expression.

"What-t?" I whined. "I don't like it when people don't answer me directly. It bugs the living crap out of me."

"No - it doesn't" Anubis answered. That smiled lasted for a bit and faded. Like fireworks.

Colors flashed on our skin as he slowly let down his walls. We got know each other during the party. He walked over to sit next to me to talk about life in general. After several hours, my eyelids slowly closed and I was unconscious.

When I woke up, I found a blanket wrapped around me and Malik walking out. I was done with this place, so I quickly walked out too. It was difficult considering how many people were passed out on the floor. God damnit... I need a ride.
