The Lake *requested*

The Lake

“I never thought we’d be here like this,” I say, looking over at him. He ruffles his hair and collapses on the towel next to me. I sit down on my legs, my orange dress barely covering my knees. The ground, a tight mixture of rock and grass, feels a bit uncomfortable under my legs for a moment until I adjust my posture.

“I… did. I saw it coming,” Harry smiles, grabbing my hand. His thumb rubs circular patterns on the back of it as he speaks. “I seriously knew it.”

“How could you-”

“Moriah, I’m joking. But I’m glad we’re here. Two whole years. I mean, two years since we were here at the lake. It’s… crazy.”

“I know. The first time I saw you, though, I remember I was terrified that you wouldn’t come and help me. You saved my life, sorta.”

“Yeah. Saved you from losing that dramatic game of monkey in the middle. You’re welcome, in case I never told you that,” he smirks, scooting closer to me.

“Right. And the year after that… when Jake tried to get me to go out with him. You set him straight pretty quick.”

Harry laughs, the sound filling me with easy warmth. “You didn’t even have eyes for me then. But I knew you thought Jake was annoying. So that was an easy decision.”

“I swear that boy never went to the bathroom again at camp.”

He laughs louder. “And that would not be my problem.”

I just smile at him warmly and look out over the lake, the trees around the bend looming at us in the night. Lights from the houses one either side of the lakefront shine dimly, and I vaguely see our camp house directly across from us. We just so happened to be in town and Harry insisted on a hunch that we stop by the lake. To my surprise, it is still deserted, despite the time of night and houses that are so close to our position. A small hint of nostalgia for those days of summer camp comes over me as I look at Harry.

“You know something?” his voice interrupts my daydreaming.

“What?”

“I’ve never admitted this before… but that first year at camp… you really, really intimidated me.”

I laugh loudly and pat his wrist, my eyes threatening to roll back dramatically. “I… what? Intimidated you? How?”

“You were always so hard to get. It’s not like you were playing… not that at all, it’s just… I’m over six feet tall and you’re so short, and yet you had this hold on me. And any other boy, really. If you didn’t like them, they bloody well knew it real fast.”

“That’s called being honest,” I counter, wagging a finger at him.

“No. I call that being a challenge… well, for most of them. Hard to get, really. But for me, you were intimidating.”

“What made you so different from the other guys?”

“I don’t know. You tell me. I have you now… so it looks like I win.” He flashes his teeth at me and moves even closer to me, his hand coming to rest on my thigh. The heat of such a small act threatens to get to me, but I shove it away and look at him longingly.

“That’s true,” I say. “But I can’t believe I used to seem like that to you.”

“You did. What about me? What was camp like for you when I was around?”

I don’t know exactly know why he’s asking so many questions; I assume it is because we are so close to our two year anniversary. But the lake has always held special memories for the both of us, because we used to sit in this same spot and share feelings all those years ago. And it wasn’t just feelings about each other – sometimes feelings about family, friends, school… anything. And now that we are together, the memories are easily overtaking us.
