Biology is a strange life course. You spend your life studying the way other things live their life. It's a very strange concept in my humble opinion. Although I suppose someone could say the same thing about what I do for a living. Being a cardiothroacic surgeon is gonna be tough man. The one at the hospital, Dr. Reynolds, is extremely hard on any interns that scrub in on his surgeries. And since I'm the only intern going into cardio I'm usually the one he asks to scrub in. My intern exam is coming up in a few weeks as well and I'm trying so hard to find the time to study but being a surgeon is draining. The hours and the energy and the exhaustion, sometimes I think it's too much and that it's not worth it. But then something happens. A successful surgery or seeing a family members face light up when you tell them their loved one made it through a risky surgery, and I remember. I remember why I wanted this job. Why I applied to medical school and worked so hard to graduate at the top of my class at Columbia University, right here in New York. I remember that this job has purpose and meaning. And that's saving peoples lives. Not everyone can be saved, that's for sure. But when you can save someone it makes everything worth it. Not showering or sleeping in two days or eating cheerios out of the box and drinking milk out of the carton for breakfast in the morning because you don't have time to wash a damn bowl and spoon before leaving for work. It's worth it.

I button up my pastel green shirt and slip on a pair of black jeans. I sighed when I look in the mirror. My legs always look way too scrawny and long compared to the rest of my body and my hair was a messy curly mop. I grabbed my straightener and turned it on, leaving it to sit for a few minutes and heat up and grabbed my phone. I hadn't used it barely at all today so it was still on 92%. I decided to text Martin and let him know I would be a few minutes late because I have to do my hair.
hey, hair is being a major ass. most likely will be late, gotta straighten :/
of course it is lmao. its aight, dont sweat it. get here soon tho
I threw my phone on my bed and picked up my straightener, being careful not to burn my hands and ran it through my hair roughly and combing through it until I was somewhat happy with how it looked. I picked up my phone and ran out to my car, driving as fast as I could to Martins house, not wanting to wait to get my hands on a beer. I need to get drunk today. I need the relaxation.
I got so caught up in my fantasies about maybe even getting laid that I didn't realize that I had drove past Martin's house. I quickly turned around in his neightbors driveway before parking across the street from his house because the drive way and lawn were full of cars. I could hear the loud thumping of music from the outside of the door before turning the knob and walking in. The strong scent of alcohol and marijuana hit my nose and I'm tempted to go back outside. However a pretty young girl smiles at me from across the room and motions me over. I smirk at her before making my way through the ocean of people in Martin's living room. This was gonna be a good night that I probably won't remember.

The sound of an ambulance siren fills the emergency room. There's people everywhere, patients and doctors all crowding the small space. I felt a lump in my throat begin to grow bigger and bigger as more people began crowding towards the door. There had been a major accident on the intersection on Main Street and multiple people were wounded.
"MAKAYLA!" The chief yelled, I turned around and found him standing next to a stretcher that held a man with a large shard of glass extending from his chest. I ran over and grabbed his chart.
"What the hell happened?" I asked.
"He's drunk off his ass." The chief replied.
"Did I do this? Did I hurt all these people? I didn't mean too....I just wanted to go home....I didn't mean too...I'm so....I'm s-so sorry" the man whispered while beginning to cry. I checked his chart again for a name.
"Mr. Nolan, I understand that this is a difficult time for you but you really need to hold still okay? Try not to talk or move." I grabbed his hand and gave him a reassuring squeeze. "We need an OR, now. Where's Dr. Reynolds?" I asked the chief.
"In surgery. You'll have to get Dr. Humphrey to help you with this."
"But Dr. Humphrey is a neurosurgeon" I argued."I don't care. This man needs emergent surgery. You can perform the precedure, Dr. Humphrey will just be there in case anything goes wrong. Your internship is almost up. You can do this." The chief said and patted my shoulder. I nodded my head and wheeled the stretcher up towards the elvator and paged Dr. Humphrey to OR 3. This is actually happening. I felt my hands begin to shake slightly so I grabbed onto my scrubs until it stopped. I can't be nervous. One twitch and you could loose a patient.

"Hey Martin. I'm gonna head home." I slurred while trying not to spill my drink and fall over. I was way too drunk to realize that this was an extremely bad choice but everyone else was too drunk or high to stop me. I finished my drink and threw the cup on the floor before making my way towards the front door. I'm pretty sure I tripped a few times and I may have threw up all over some girls shoes but it's ok. I stumbled out the door and walked towards my car, practically falling in after I figure out how to open the door. I was in no shape to be driving but I of course payed no attention to that. I began thinking about eams and how much I didn't give a shit about it right now. I was all just so pointless and I was so drunk. I got so caught up in my thoughts about how little I cared about anything that I didn't realize that the traffic light was red and drove straight in front of another car. I heard the sound of tires screetching. There was a loud crash and then everything was silent.
