The Fields Of Death And Life

Chapter One

Ebony bolted up in bed, slamming her head off of the bed above her.
" Ow." Ebony groaned, rubbing her forehead. She through her legs over the side of the bed, and stood up to head downstairs into the kitchen for a glass of water. She quietly walked out of her bedroom, making sure she didn't wake her younger sister. She opened her door, and cautiously walked down the hallway, her feet patting on the sleek oak floor. Ebony passed her aunt's bedroom door, and heading down the stairs. She walked into her kitchen, which had a marble floor, counter, and island, and birch cupboards. A large bowl of fruit was put in the center of the island, even though they were non edible, Ebony learned that the hard way. Ebony circled the island, and walked towards the faucet, turning it on. While she waited for it to cool down, she grabbed a cylinder glass from one of the birch cupboards. After putting her finger under the water to check the temperature, she placed the glass underneath the stream of water. Turning the faucet off, Ebony gulped down the water.
" sissy?" a tired voice of a child said. Ebony quickly turned around, and saw her little sister, Leona.
" Le? Why are you awake?" Ebony asked Leona, bending down to the 5 year old's height of 3 feet.
" I had a bad dream." Leona whimpered, sadness evident in her shimmering turquoise eyes. Ebony smiled sweetly at her little sister.
" I did too. Why don't I get you a glass of water, and we can talk about it." Ebony suggested. Leona nodded, smiling up at Ebony. Ebony picked up Leona, and placed her down on the smooth island. Once Ebony filled another glass with water, she handed it to Leona, and listened as Leona started to talk about the events that happened in her dream.
" so, I was in a field of red roses, that went out for miles. I got scared because I didn't see you or Hank," Hank was Ebony's older brother, who was 15 years old, " and I started to run. I ran for quite a while, when I saw you, lying still on the ground. I ran towards you, and you were bleeding, there was a lot of blood." Leona took a shaky breath then continued, " I started crying, and you looked at me. You smiled at me and said, ' don't cry. I'll always be with you, so don't cry." Leona started sobbing, and Ebony held her tight against her chest.
" shh, shh, it's alright, I'm here. I'll never leave you." Ebony shushed Leona, swaying back and forth, and playing with Leona's dirty blonde hair, which seemed to always calm her down.
" pinky promise?" Leona croaked out, holding out her pinky finger, and staring into Ebony's blue irises, as her eyes sparkled with tears.
" pinky promise." Ebony laughed, intertwining her finger with Leona's tiny finger. " alright. Let's head to bed."
" ok." Leona yawned. Ebony grabbed Leona, and placed her on her hip. Ebony walked through the wide opening, that lead to the living room. She headed to the other opening on the right, and started to walk up the staircase. Once she reached the top of the stairs, she headed back to their room, and opened the door. Ebony walked towards the right side of the room, where Leona's green bed with white pillows was placed. Ebony placed down Leona, and started to head to her baby blue bed with white pillows, when she felt a tugged on her wrist.
" can you sleep with me sissy? I'm scared." Leona asked Ebony, who nodded with a grin on her face. Ebony crawled into bed, and held Leona to her chest.
" I love you sissy." Ebony heard Leona mumble. When Ebony looked down at Leona she saw that she was asleep.
" I love you too Leona." Ebony smiled, then fell asleep herself.
