Kara's old glove is in here." Craig delved back into the cab and under the seat. "He stripped out of his clothing and then the most amazing thing happened. He dove into the water and as he swam away, a tail swished out of the water behind him just before he disappeared under the waves. I thought it looked like the tail of a shark and I was very afraid for him. Zach felt inside his pocket. His money was still there, the ten dollars Dad had given him at the store months ago- he still had that with him, waiting for just the right time to spend it. Now, for food, seemed as good a time as any. What was she thinking? This man was dangerous, a murderer. Still, she couldn't seem to help herself. Even though he'd just killed three men, in his arms she felt safe, protected. "They brought the bus?" Kara gaped. Sure enough, the door opened and church members streamed. Kara could feel his tension beneath her touch as he worked not to pull away again. She withdrew her hand. "Okay, clean that up and give it to paws. I'll warm up some more for you." Zach took a deep breath; Mom was right, it helped to calm you down. When Mom told him things, they helped him. Why would she do that if she didn't...? "My parents do love me!" he declared. Eddie leaned back against the couch cushions, making no effort to hide his incredulity. "If it's all such a sure thing, Dad, why do you need Zach?" "This realization launched a new, bitter churning in Kara's belly. When so many women like her could never bear a child, how could anyone send such a beautiful young boy away? How could anyone be so calloused, so cruel? Mom grabbed a stack of papers from the table and shoved them into her work bag. "Yes, I need to go in for a few hours, unfortunately." "Maybe later," I said quickly. Or, maybe never, I thought. As if I wanted my new friends to realize how absolutely, terribly boring my life had been before I came here. "Yes, he was trying to get the sharks to attack me. But they didn't." "Are you okay?" I asked her. "Good morning," he said, bowing slightly. Inside, two cushioned bench seats faced each other, with several royal-blue pillows for back support. Lennek was sitting on the far side in the forward-facing seat, tapping his foot. Rema Lennek shrugged his shoulders."Until I'm bored." "Hi, Professor Nolan. Sorry, I was just showing my girlfriend, Meara, the animals. We'll go now." "Maybe ten. I guess I'm not as big a fan as you, but i love old horror movies." "I could try some," Zach offered. "No." A sudden chill ran down Kara's spine. The man was too comfortable. He ought to have threatened them furiously or raced out the door in search of Zach. "Go on..." "So, David," I said casually, toying with my pie. "How long are you planning on staying this time?" "Sure, sweetie." Mom put her book down and stood up. "Do you want to show me what you bought today?" The prince did not return to see Rema, nor was any food brought for the remainder of the day. when darkness finally descended, Rema moved to the door. There weren't any voices in the hallway. Lying on the ground, she peered under the door. The two shadows of her guards remained stationed there. "I did, but he was always traveling for his work. That's why I had to stay with a nanny.I hardly ever saw him." "What?" Peter leaned forward and clasped Evan on the shoulder. "Mitchell, you're the best on the team. You could probably go pro now if you wanted to." "Mm-hmm." "He's really fun. He actually talks to me," Zach grinned. "Grandfather would only talk to me when he was telling me what to do. If I tried to talk to him, he would tell me to leave him alone. But granddad likes it when I talk to him." It was time to tackle the stack of boxes the movers left in the corner of my room. I could arrange the room to my liking. Not that I minded my grandmother's decorating, but it was always nice to be surrounded by your own things. Opening a box, I got started unpacking and decorating. I asked the bored-looking man at customer Service if he could help me find them. He perked up when he saw this list, confessing his love of fantasy and folklore. "Sorry," the second guard muttered, taking hold of her other arm. The guards pulled her inside. The door slammed shut, the bang echoing through the unknown. A fire appeared in front of her face, forcing her to squint. "Now, I think it's time I hear who took you prisoner. I want names. I want details and don't leave anything out." Triton looked Sara in the eye. Eddie's breath caught. He didn't understand where Nyler was going with this. Was Nyler really trying to trap him? "What do you mean?" he asked warily. "Who says I didn't?" Hesitantly, with a glance up at her through eyes that were suddenly red, he placed his hand into the water, wincing as it struck the wound and washed the blood away. The cook shrugged. "Maybe ten, fifteen minutes ago?" "Ex," she stressed, "but yes. Something like that." Arnek squeezed her arm, stopping before the prince. He leaned in and whispered, "Don't do anything to embarrass the prince. And don't make a fool of yourself in front of his guests by telling them you were brought here against your will. They won't believe you, and your aunt and uncle would pay dearly for your unbecoming actions." He released her. "Xanthus, the people that try to weasel out of paying me aren't looking to draw attention from the police. They pay up. And if they don't," she shrugged. "I just have to eat a lot of macroni and cheese for a while." His heart stopped. A nurse told me an anonymous person had brought me to the Emergency Room, leaving swiftly before anyone could ask him questions. All he had said as he handed me off was that I had almost drowned in the river. With the heavy rainstorm bringing in a surge of victims from other accidents, he had been able to slip away quickly in the chaos. "Are you hungry?" he asked as he pulled out and merged into the "get me the hell out of here, it's Friday" traffic. The guards released her arms and nudged her forward, out of the
