This story starts out in 1956 in Arizona. It was almost noon when he came riding in on his horse. His name was Mat. Simple name for a simple fella. The town he was riding in was so small, you could sneeze and wake everyone up. He was trying to find a place to rest. Maybe a motel of some sort. It was hot. Real hot. He needed to hurry because he had already drank all of his water, and in Arizona being dehydrated ain't no joke, my friend. Now since it was hot, you'd figure Mat would be wearing something that fit the weather. Well this fella had on some jeans, which isn't so bad considering I ain't never heard or seen nobody back then wear shorts. The real problem was he had a thick wool coat on with a red button up dress shirt. Mat also had a hat. A hat that was dear to him. If anybody tried to touch it, he tried to break their wrist. Everybody that came across him asked "Aren't you hot in that big jacket?" He replied simply with a smile and with a tip of his hat. "I'm fine, but thank ya for the worry."
Mat wasn't necessarily a country boy, but he wasn't a city boy either. He just liked what he liked, and did whatever he felt like doing at the moment. One thing Mat loved was his horse. Mat had been through a lot with Temmie. Mat is a strong man and believes that when it's time to let it out, then you should cry a river if need be. Mat would surely cry a river if Temmie passed away before him.
As Mat was looking around for a place to nap, someone called out to him. "Hey there!" The unknown stranger said. "You on the horse! Come here!" Mat looked over and it looked like the fella was standing in front of a bar. Mat directed Temmie in the direction of the guy calling 'im. "You need me?" Mat asked. "I ain't never seen you before. When you get here, fella?" The guy asked Mat. Mat smiled and spoke. "Well I asked you a question first, sir. Do you need me?" Mat asked again, more serious, but not threatening. "I need you to answer my question." The stranger said, smartly. "Well how 'bout this?" Mat asked. "I'll answer yo' question. After I get some rest. Where's the nearest bed, sir?" He asked. The stranger seemed aggitated. "Who said you could stay here?" The stranger asked. Mat tipped his hat. Smiled. And left, in search for a motel once more. "Don't you turn your back on me!" The stranger yelled at Mat. Mat kept riding on Temmie, without a word.
