The TARDIS Chronicles: A set of Short Stories from inside the Blue Box.
The Doctor, tired and down, leaned against the console, trying to think. Donna Noble, his companion, was on the phone with her nagging mother. It was Jenny's birthday. "At least..it would have been...should have been." The Doctor thought to himself, closing his eyes in self-recrimination. Suddenly, a red flashing light appeared by the phone. A distress call. Wearily, the Doctor leaned over, hitting the button, filling the room with the sound of static and alarms.
"Hello?? Hello?! Is anyone there??"
The Doctor's head snapped up at the voice, as he leaned towards the phone.
"Jenny." He whispered, shocked. Donna walked into the room snapping her phone shut, looking rather confused. "Is that Jenny??" She said, running over.
"Please, if there's anyone nearby, this is Jenny, from the planet Messaline. My space pod is crashing, and I need immediate help. If anyone can hear me please he-" Jenny's voice was cut off as a loud crashing sound was heard, while Jenny talks in the background. "You bloody piece of junk!! Work, just pull up!! " The sound is getting harder to tell the words apart from the static and crashing. The Doctor ran over to the monitor, locking onto Jenny's
signal.
"No!" He said, running his hands through his hair.
Donna ran over, "What's wrong?? Why was she cut off?"
The Doctor answered while running about the console trying to pull Jenny's ship into the TARDIS. "She's gotten pulled into an asteroid field, she's going to get beaten to pieces if I can't get to her in time!"
"Well then bloody save her then!!" Donna retorted.
The Doctor glanced at Donna. "Thank you for the fantastic advice. I would not have been able to do it on my own."
Donna narrowed her eyes, ready to retort, but sighed instead. "Sorry..I'll try and keep my mouth shut.
The Doctor yanked a switch, and watched as a beaten up spaceship materialize in the far end of the room. But something was wrong here. There wasn't a single sound emminating from the ship. Jenny was...silent. The Doctor froze, watching with a terrified expression. "Please...please no...". He ran forwards, running to save Jenny, when the ship burst into flames. And then the screaming began.
"NOO!!" The Doctor threw off his jacket, lunging forward, trying to get to his daughter. Not caring that the flames were burning his hands, arms, burning relentlessly, he wrenched open the door, ducking as a cloud of smoke came in. Jenny, caught between her chair and a dented wall, was caught as the fire burned her alive. Acting quickly, the Doctor ripped off the seat, grabbing Jenny and dashing out as the ship exploded. The force knocked him off his feet, sending both of them flying. Moving himself so Jenny would be safe, they landed next to the console, Jenny unconsious from pain. Donna, working with the console and putting the fire out, gasped in horror. Jenny's body was covered in scars, old and new, and the skin on her hands and face were terribly burned. The Doctor kneeled next to Jenny, holding her head. A thousand thoughts raced through his mind, like, "She's gone..my baby is gone again." , "I could have saved her.", "I failed my daughter again!", and "How is she here?"
His stomach feeling sick and his mind running overtime, he brushed the hair gently from her face, saying quietly, "Jenny..Jenny sweetheart wake up. Please wake up!" His hands were shaking, his fears rampant.
Donna ran over and looked at the disfigured girl. "Do you have any kind of medicine here?"
"No," The Doctor said, his thoughts running away, "But I know a hospital." Laying Jenny gently on the ground, he raced around the console yet again, taking that blue box to the New New York City Hospital.
As soon as they had landed, The Doctor picked Jenny up, cradling her, murmuring, "You will be all right..you'll be fantastic..please Jenny, please.." Dashing towards the hospital, with Donna hot on his heels, he skidded I to the lobby.
"OI! ONE OF YOU LOT HELP!!" The Doctor yelled, running purely on adrenaline. A nurse ran over with a gurney, and he set his little girl down. As quick as she had come, the nurse was gone, with little Jenny. The Doctor sat against the wall, running his hands through his hair, emotion starting to bubble through.
Donna sat next to him, unsure of what to say. "She's going to be all right, don't worry."
The Doctor's head snapped up. "How can you know that?? How do you know she'll be ok??" He retorted scared stressed and close to crying in fear.
Donna smiled sadly. "She's your daughter. Not only that, but she was gone, and she's back now. She will be all right."
The Doctor studied Donna for a long moment, and sighed. "You're right."
Donna looked at him oddly then grinned. "What was that? What words did I just hear?"
Ten glared kiddingly at Donna. "Better remember it, I don't plan on saying it again!"
Meanwhile, the nurses set up an IV for Jenny, while finding burn medicine they had leftover from the Duke of New New Jersey. One of the nurses looked at Matron, whispering, "Matron..she's a new kind..she has two hearts, looks human, but only has one set of DNA...once she's healed perhaps she would be an excellent testing specimen."
Matron studied the unconscious Jenny rather blankly. "Perhaps. But we will have to distract her visitors." Her head snapped up. "Well don't just stand there! Get to it! Tell them..tell them she may not make it, whatever you have to!"
The nurse nodded, and walked quietly back to the Doctor and Donna, both looking up as she approached. "I'm sorry about your daughter, you as parents must be sick with worry."
Donna and the Doctor looked at each other and back, interrupting each other, "Oh we're not married." "He is not my husband!"
The slightly confused nurse nodded on acknowledgment, and continued with her report. "I'm so sorry but..your daughter..she's not doing well..she has an hour, probably less to live."
The Doctor jumped up, immediately sick to his stomach. "Where is she?? I need to see her!!"
The nurse shook her head. "She's being taken to the emergency room, she's contracted a deadly disease from..Apalapachia."
She only paused for a small second, but the Doctor seemed to notices the uncertainness. Meanwhile, Donna exploded. "LET US IN TO SEE HER NOW! WHAT DO YOU MEAN SHE'S GONNA DIE??" Doctor turned to calm her, the nurse quickly leaving to return back for the preparation process, nodding to the seemingly unknowing Matron as she passed.
The Doctor stayed rather quiet though. Donna wheeled on him. "Why aren't you flipping out?? That's your daughter!!"
The Doctor looked at her, thinking. "Jenny's only a few months old, and didn't have a teleporter."
Donna looked at him incredulously. "So??"
"So, the diseases on Apalapachia was killed over twenty years ago. So how did Jenny catch it?"
Donna went quiet for a moment. "You think they're lying?"
The Doctor didn't immediately respond. "Something isn't right..not right at all."
Jenny, helpless, layed unconscious as the nurses placed her in a contamination pod. Her eyes opened slightly. "Dad.." she said weakly, before falling unconscious again, as a green door shut before her, snapping shut.
