I could feel Lily smirking at me

I wanted to tell her to shut up, but I couldn't because Black was in the compartment. Not only was he in the same compartment, but he was not with James or playing with his hair or showing off. He was actually having a normal conversation. Or about as normal as conversations got with him. I wished I had one of those muggle recording things.

".....and then I said, I AM A DEAD MAN!!!!"

"Wait, why?" I asked, perplexed because it didn't fit into to what he had just said.

"Not that, it's..." then he stifled a groan as James walked in.

Sirius forced a grin, "Where've you been Prongs."

James raised his eyebrows, "In our compartment. Where have you been?"

Sirius simply waved his arm around our compartment.

James shot Sirius a look. I couldn't tell what it was, (jealousy, anger, maybe both) but it wasn't good for Sirius. However, he merely shrugged.

"Morning Evans," James said cheerfully.

Lily grunted indifferently and started reading a magazine.

Goals, I thought to myself. This was probably the first (and quite possibly the last) conversation she had ever had with James Potter without showing open hostility. If you could call it a conversation.

An awkward silence followed after this and I was about to follow Lily's example and read, but then Sirius asked loudly if anyone wanted to go with him to see if there was any more food on the trolley.

"Nah," James replied, "I'm not hungry."

I knew he was lying. Not because I'm very good at deciphering truth from lies, but because James Potter was always hungry. He was just hoping to be alone with Lilly.

And it looked like he was going to get his wish, because there was no way I was going to stay in that compartment with just the two of them.

"I'll come," I said, earning myself a glare from Lilly.

This considerably lightened James mood, however. He and Sirius exchanged a meaningful glance before we left.

"Good summer?" He asked

"Can't complain," I lied. I could complain a lot actually, and I already had to Lilly.

He seemed to know I was lying, (because I have absolutely no lying skills). I was glad when he didn't press it, though.

By the time we got to the food trolley, all that was left were some chocolate frogs and one box of Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans. We cleaned it out and I bit the head off a chocolate frog.

"I guess Evans and James are getting along." He said as we neared the compartment and there was the absence of explosions and shouting and blood on the windows.

"That's pushing it, Black," I said, since there was also an absence of everything else.

He smirked, "maybe."

There was a short pause. We stayed put of sight of the compartment windows, both of us unwilling to return to the awkwardness.

"James is planning on asking Evans out to the next Hogsmeade weekend," Sirius said, carelessly inspecting the end of his wand.

"She's gonna say no," I said smirking.

He smirked back, "Yeah, probably. Who will she go with then?"

I shrugged, "The first boy who asked her that's not James. Or you!" I added hastily, wondering where he was going with this.

He laughed, "if I went with Evans James would murder me. Did you see his face when he found me in the same compartment as her?  Actually, I was going to ask you if you wanted to go with me." He said confidently.
