Once you have established your aquarium, have added your fish and did your first water change it is time to talk about the care and maintaining of your aquarium.
There are things you need to do daily, these include feeding the fish, checking the temperature of the water, observing the fish behaviors, and checking the equipment for errors or malfunctions. Now, I have had many people ask me about the type of food you should feed your fish. Depending on the type of pet fish you have, they may or may not have a special diet. Most fish do not have special diets to staple foods like tropical fish flakes are made to feed any fish. They are of course, live foods, pellets, flakes, and freeze dried foods to feed your pet fish. I have found that flakes works best for my fish, but you can choose any type of food you want.
Weekly things are very important to maintain as well, these will include; topping off the tank with new water, doing water test either by using test strips or liquid tests, and doing small or large water changes. Water changes must be done every one or two weeks regardless if everything looks good. Water changes keep the aquarium nice and clean and keep your fish healthy.
There are a few monthly things you need to do as well, the first is replace your bio-filter or regular filter, scrap off any algae that has collected on the tank and vacuum the gravel, if you don't already do so when you do your weekly water changes. Also replace any equipment that been broken or has "outdated." This will in sure proper aquarium maintenance.
