Day of Reckoning

Scott shuffled down the marble halls of a large heavenly mansion. And heavenly may have been literal, but here, it seemed like an understatement. Luxurious paintings and tapestries lined the walls, and armed guards were around every corner.

He'd received a summons from God himself about his suspicious absence, and the new person reported coming through the gates with him, dripping black demon blood. The guards looked at him like he was a rat, a criminal.

Maybe he was... but would it not be more criminal to leave Vincent where he was? Would it be more godlike to watch somebody endlessly suffer, more angelic to turn a blind eye?

He wiped at his eyes, arriving at the gold doors at the end of a long hallway. He knew that behind the doors sat God Himself. He'd never actually met God... the summons usually weren't good, and nobody had actually said what He looked like because they usually didn't come back. He didn't figure they'd died or anything; it was God, for Christ's sake. They probably just worked on Earth, now... poor guys.

He couldn't stand here forever. He pushed open the door, and was hit with a cool gust of air. He hurried through the heavy entrance, and watched as the block of gold slammed behind him. He stared forward into white eyes and dark skin.

"S-sir."

"Scott."

He gulped. So this was what He looked like. "S-sir, God, e-er, I'm so sorry... l-look, it's not what you--"

"You brought a demon into Heaven after staying in Hell for a week. I know you must have good reason."

"Uh, S-Sir..."

"I'm not being malicious in the slightest. When you're God, you know everything has to happen for a reason. I never fated this, so... what happened?"

"Sir, I... I fell in love."

The room was silent. Not even a shuffle of feet or a nervous tittering of cloth could be heard. They both sat silent, at this proclamation. What could be said? Scott decided to break the silence.

"Surely, love is the one thing you can't fate. Love's a power you can't control. And Sir, you didn't know it, not even I knew it at first, but I fell in love with him from when I first met him. I fell in love with his fight. With his smile, his stories, his happiness. Even when his wings were cut from his back, he saw me and smiled. I loved his tears, too. There were plenty, there will be plenty, and I'll be damned if they're shed in Hell. Because, Sir, I just want him to be here, with me. He doesn't deserve to go back there and be a slave, or be seen as the scum of the realms. Sir... the person in my home right now is a demon, but he is not a monster. He's the most beautiful person I know, and one of the kindest. He's done the most selfless things, and... a-and all for me..." He swiped at his eyes with his arm quickly. "S-Sir... Sir, please... I-I love him."

"Scott... I understand."

"W... w-what?"

"I understand. And I'll let him stay. As long as he doesn't cause any mischief."

"O-oh... oh, S-Sir... c-can I hug you?"

"No. But you can go." God smiled. "Go ahead. Go to him."

"T-thank you, Sir."

And he did just that. He ran home and burst through the front door, now sobbing from happiness.

"Scott?" Vincent peeked out from the kitchen, the smell of a late breakfast permeating the air. "H-how'd it go?"

"Oh, Vincent..." He hugged the demon tight, causing him to let out a tiny yelp of surprise. "You get to stay... f-forever and ever, y-you get to stay..."

"S-Scott..." Soon they were both just a smiling, sobbing mess. Scott wiped his tears and kissed him, hands wrapped around his waist, and Vincent wasted no time kissing back. Sobbing. Smiling. Saved. Side by side.
