______
You know that clichéd story of a boy who is abused at home, cuts, almost dies and has to go to the crazy house? He ends up falling in love with one of the guys there and he lives happily ever after… That isn’t my story. Mine is… worse.
“Ian, come over here and take a picture with us!” my little sister squealed. I smiled and ran towards her, picking her three year old body up off the ground. She laughed in delight and I put her down, facing my mother.
She held up her fist, “On three!” she called from behind the camera, her smile the only feature that was showing. “One,” she started. Something out of the corner of my eye caught my attention, sliding my gaze from the camera, I spotted the oncoming car.
“Two…”
Reacting quickly, I scooped my sister body into my arms and jumped before the car could hit us. We landed awkwardly, my elbow hitting soft skin. My sister screamed and I laid on the hot dirt in shock, the adrenaline leaving my system.
“Lucy!” my mother screamed. I could hear her footsteps running towards us. She stopped right above me and kicked my side, making me take a lungful of desert dirt. I rolled over and plopped onto the ground, my face in the dirt. “Oh god!”
I turned my head in the direction of my mother’s moaning. “L-Lucy…” I stuttered, my mouth hanging open as I stared into her lifeless eyes. Her neck was bent in an awkward position, her body facing a completely different direction than normal.
“You bastard!” my mother screamed at me, falling on top of me and hitting me repeatedly in the face. I held my arms up in defense, a surprised gasp escaping my lips.
“Laura!” suddenly my mother was pulled off of me, her arms and legs flailing.
“I hate you!” tears entered my eyes as I looked into my mother’s screaming face. Her eyes told it all… I was the one who killed her daughter. No matter what anyone said.
_____
“Ian Fitzgerald,” I stood up on shaky legs, my hospital gown pooled around my knees. When I walked up to the window, the nurse behind the thick glass smiled and put my pills into a paper cup. Sliding them forward, she nodded her head and looked behind me to the next patient.
I grabbed the cup and threw the pills into my mouth dry. After years of doing this… I am used to them.
I walked past all of the random moaning patients, some silent as I walked by, others not.
“Get them away from me!”
“Top of the mornin’ to yah.”
“I’m going to kill all of you. You hear me, all of you!”
“Mr. Rabbit and I like to go to the movies… do you like movies?”
“Watch it you stupid fag!” I winced as I ran into Tyler. He grabbed my arms and shoved me aside. “Stupid butt-fucker,” he growled, glaring at me as he walked past.
