Saturday& Sunday, July 9&10, 2016: Hearts are heavy... emotions raw... and there's a melancholic awareness of the need for change in the world. Still even in the darkest of times there can be hope that a better world is possible. So don't let fear hold you back... get busy living this weekend. Involve yourself with others and move from place to place. It's a beautiful Summer weekend when a good time can be had by all.
One of my favorite films is "The Shawshank Redemption." This film is not just your run of the mill prison movie... it's a movie about the power of hope. In the film Andy, played by Tim Robbins, in the midst of dire circumstances while serving a life sentence for a crime he claimed he didn't commit... held onto hope. But... According to Red, played by Morgan Freeman... "At Shawshank Prison, everyone believes they're innocent and hope is just a #&%*$ pipe dream." Throughout the movie, Andy and Red debate the role of hope in a place like Shawshank.
During a pivotal final scene Andy asked Red; "Do you think you'll ever get out of here?" To which Red replied... "Yeah when I'm old and gray, with a few marbles rolling around in my head. I don't know if I could make it on the outside, I'm a institutional man." Red had become habituated to the security of prison life and cynical about the prospect of being paroled..."These walls are funny. First you hate 'em, then you get used to 'em. Enough time passes, you get so you depend on them."
Like Red you too can become habituated, tolerant, even dependent on the false security promised by the walls that seem to surround you... walls that are often of your own making. But walls work both ways... they may keep the world of others out... but they also restrict our hope and freedom.
Andy was different. He kept hope alive by dreaming and even visualizing his future freedom. He stayed productive, and in order to advance his strategy he made friends and alliances... even with the prison guards. His hope was cultivated by a plan of action and daily steps.
Andy had a " meticulous nature." He didn't dwell on past disappointments and mistakes. He was curious, observant and thorough... he developed constructive habits and attitudes. He learned how to overcome obstacles. He made consistent progress with daily decisions that advanced him toward the prize. And... his unwavering commitment and intention eventually delivered that prize...freedom.
In Andy's final conversation with Red, he said probably the best line in the film... "Guess it comes down to a simple choice; get busy living, or get busy dying."
The greatest message of this movie is to be a victor not a victim. That it's okay to hope and dream again. So... make the decision, plot your escape, execute your plan and the life changing process will follow.
Choose to live, dream and hope. Whatever your circumstance, it boils down to our ability to choose your attitude, envision your future and take the small steps every day to achieve it... that's the substance of faith and hope.
