Chapter 3

"Chi Foa I am disappointed in you" scorned her mother "hundreds of millions starve and you agree to starve and you help him buy up cheaper grain reserved for poorer people so he can pocket the difference. Chi sat their awkwardly, not knowing what to say. "At least she will be earning a little extra money on the side" said her father. Her mother shot him down with an icy glare. "Go off to your room!" she screeched. Chi didn't have to as it was her flat, but she did so anyway. He walked obediently to her room and shut the door behind her, determined to stay strong.

She cried immediately.

How could her mother not accept her decisions?After all she had done for her parents.She had worked herself to the limits in school to get them a flat in Xi'an. She gazed out the window . Her eyes went back and fourth as she studied the people far down below crawling like ants . When her older sister was born the city had a population of under 500,000 , now it had 13,600,000 people scurrying throughout the cities veins. The financial district where Chi worked was the heart of the city. Although she could not see it because of the apocalyptic levels of pollution.

She heard a soft knock on the door.

"Im asleep" she said irritably . The door open anyway and her Dad stepped in. Chi found her Dad kinder than her mother and more comfortable to talk with. She turned around."Are you ok Chi?" he asked , sitting himself down on the bed."Yes" she lied, joining him on the bed."I know your mother can be-" , "ungrateful " she interrupted. "harsh" he continued. "But you have got to remember that she had a hard upbringing , her family was affected greatly by The Great Leap Forward". Chi gasped . She had forgotten that many of her mothers family had died of starvation in that period She understood her mothers outburst. "Now get some sleep " he said warmly , shutting the door behind him. Chi climbed into bed and turned of the lights. "Goodnight" she whispered to herself .
