Chapter 8

Middle of the night...

Ellington POV

"Ell. Ell!"

I sighed, hearing Riker whining. It's the middle of the night!

"Ell!"

"What, Riker?"

"My back!"

"What about it?"

"It hurts."

I sighed.

"Riker, just go to sleep."

"I can't! It hurts!"

"Lay on your stomach."

"Ell!"

I groaned, and turned on the light. There was blood in his bed and on his pajama top.

"Riker..."

"It hurts," he said, starting to cry.

"Come here."

I pulled him out of bed, and into the bathroom. I ran back to our room, and got him a pillow.

"Lay down on the floor."

He did as I said. I pulled his shirt off, and started to wipe his back off, like I'd done earlier. I guess his cuts came open in his sleep...

"Ell, it hurts... Stop..."

"Riker, you're bleeding a lot. You move around too much in your sleep."

"I had a nightmare."

"That's why..."

I sighed. The poor boy...

"Ok, I'm going to wet this towel, and then I want you to sleep on it, ok?"

"On the bathroom floor?"

"No. In bed. I'll put another towel underneath the wet one so it doesn't soak the bed."

Riker POV

I slowly walked back into our bedroom. Ell came in a few minutes later with a dry towel and a damp one. He got it all set up, and then had me lay down. The towel felt like it was burning my cuts.

"Ell?"

"What?"

He shut off the light and got into bed.

"I can't do this anymore."

"Can't do what?"

"I can't get hurt anymore. This is almost unbearable, and earlier, it was unbearable. I blacked out. I can't go through anything like that again."

"I don't think you have to. The marks will still be there on Monday."

I sighed.

"Ok..."

"Just try to go back to sleep, ok, Rik? I'm sure you'll feel a little better in the morning."

"Unless I have another nightmare and start bleeding again."

"Don't think about that. Just sleep."

"Ok..."

Monday...

Riker POV

I was literally shaking as we got dropped off at school by Mr.Mark. We were in our uniforms. They'd been washed, and shrunk a little, and mine was really tight and uncomfortable. We watched Mr.Mark drive away.

"Ok. Let's go, Riker," Ell said, pulling me away from the school.

"Ugh, these clothes hurt so much!"

"How?"

"Well they're really tight, and they're rubbing on my cuts!"

"Just keep walking. I watched on our way here. The police station is just down the road, I think."

"Ok."

I walked next to Ell, down the road.

Suddenly, a car pulled up to us. I didn't recognize the guy driving.

"Aren't you guys supposed to be at school?" The guy asked.

"No. Well, yeah. But we need to go to the police!" Ell said.

"Why is that?"

"We got adopted, and we're getting abused."

"Are you Mr.Mark's children?"

"Yeah."

"Get in my car. I'll give you a ride there."

Ell and I got in the back of his car. Finally. We're going to get help.

I watched out the window. The guy passed the police station, and kept going.

"Hey! Didn't we just pass it!?" Ell asked.

"Yup. I'm taking you back home. Mr.Mark is going to be very disappointed in you two."

My heart started racing. We're doomed!

"Riker, it'll be ok. Stay calm," Ell whispered.

My hands started to shake. And then my whole body started to shake. Tears were coming out of my eyes nonstop. By the time we got home, it felt like I couldn't breathe.

The guy got out, grabbed both of us by the wrist, and dragged us inside the house. I was breathing so hard and fast, but it felt like no oxygen was getting in my lungs. I can't breathe!

"Look who tried to skip school and go to the police."

Mr.Mark grabbed our arms, and pushed us onto the couch. He went into another room to talk to the guy who brought us home.

"I can't breathe!"

"Rik, calm down, and you'll be able to breathe."

"I c-can't! H-he's going to h-hurt us! I-I c-can't!"

Ell pulled me to his chest, and I broke down even more. My back still hurts really bad. I can't go through something worse than that!

"E-E-Ell!"

"Riker, we're going to be ok."

His voice was shaking. He knew that was a lie. We're not going to be ok.

Ell POV

I was trying to stay calm for Riker's sake. I knew we were in such big trouble. And I didn't know what he was going to do to us for it.

Riker's body kept getting more and more tense. He had his arms around me so tight, and his fingernails were almost digging into my back.

I leaned back on the couch, and pulled him onto my lap. He was shaking so hard now, and his crying had practically turned into screaming.

"Rik, we're going to be ok," I whispered.

I heard the front door slam shut, and then Mr.Mark came into the room.

"Rik. Come on," I said, trying to pry him off of me.

He fell down on the couch next to me, laying there in a helpless lump.

"P-please d-don't h-hurt u-us!" Riker screamed.

"We have rules, Riker. The rules are there for a reason, and if you don't follow them, you must be punished," Mr.Mark said, firmly.

"P-please! I-I'm s-sorry! I c-can't t-take any m-more p-pain!" Riker screamed.

"Well since you're being more annoying than Ellington, let's start with you."

"N-no!"

He took Riker's arm, and started to walk away, but stopped.

"If you try to leave and I catch you, you're dead," Mr.Mark said.

I just nodded, trying to stay calm.

He turned, and started to drag Riker to the basement door. He dragged him all the way down, and all I heard were pain filled screams.
