You know, you never really know when your life’s about to become a living hell. I didn’t, and I’m the apprentice of the Externo Gang. Roughly translated, it means “horrify” in Latin.
To get you up to date, I’ll start from the beginning. My father bailed on the responsibilities of our gang to shack up with some Persian chic when I was twelve. My brothers, Nash and Julian, where thirteen, and my eldest, Anthon, was sixteen. At the time, none of us knew the true reason. All we knew was that one of us had to take charge. We obviously voted Anthon as our boss, seeing as he was our elder and had more experience than me or the rest of us. Not to mention everyone in the gang knew him and trusted his decision much more than us.
Surprisingly, he chose me as his apprentice. I was the youngest for one and a girl for two. I wasn’t even able to ask why before he led me into a room filled with our head captains. They stood up and just kind of stared at me.
“You may all sit now,” he told them all. “This is my only sister, Honor, and she’ll be helping out with some of our more major steals.” Now they all gawked as if they thought he’d lost his mind. I did the same. How in the hell was I supposed to help out with major steals? I’m a child for heaven’s sake! I’m not so sure I could help catch a bee much less stealing or shooting or whatever else they do in gangs! They had a better chance at a baby doing better, or so I thought.
Finally, someone said what everyone else in this room was thinking, though not a smart idea at all. “Why your younger sister? She’s a girl, is she not? Why not one of your younger brothers, Nash or even Julian? They are fantastic at the shooting ranges, know five types of martial arts, and have even earned a black tear! They know the ins and outs of this business and this young, foolish girl knows nothing!” This fat, suicidal man sure was outraged. Usually when you speak against the big man, you get killed, quick. Anthon simply chuckled before leading me to the front of the room where a large TV was stationed against the wall.
Seemingly talking to air, he said in a half humorous, half serious tone, “Solomon, please switch it to the slide.” Suddenly, without warning, a video game popped up on the screen. On it were the words Operation 87 in big, bold print. I was sucked in instantly. “Honor, please finish this game.” He handed me an old-fashioned hand controller and I nodded.
I clicked play and suddenly the room was eerily quiet, as if no one dared to take a breath. The lights dimmed as I saw about twenty guards with specific rules. No killing the guards. You may not give away your location. If you are caught, you may only engage in hand-to-hand combat or knock them out with a modified, flammable knockout gas. Simple enough, I thought to myself, and a nice suicidal fail-safe if I get stuck in a messy situation. I had gotten past the twenty guards easily, and knew that the rest wouldn’t be so simple.
I took my time, using my eyes and ears to find sensor lasers, shut down traps, and knock out a couple of guards who caught me. I eventually got the epicenter of this building. Using a mirror dentists use when checking out your teeth to look into a window on a door, I saw a man surrounded by eleven guards. I knew I had to use the remains of my knockout gas, but I had to figure out why he was so well guarded. I waited, keeping my ear against the door and listening. I finally heard why, or rather saw since they type out on the bottom what he’s saying.
“Why hasn’t the “amazing” warrior of the Externo Gang come to fight yet?” He said. I could hear the thick Italian accent he wore and knew he was our biggest competitor in the gang business. The head of the Italian mob. What can I say? The guy’s an utter asshole with no sense of right and wrong. I wanted to get this done quick. Lucky for me, he was smoking and, knowing that this bit of knockout gas is flammable, I threw the rest of the tank into the room with it on full blast before running back.
A huge explosion came from just a few feet behind me but my main mission now was to hide. I ran and hid in a pitch black corner and crouched down, knowing they wouldn’t trust their eyes for one and also knowing that anything below the eye is quickly dismissed from the brain. I watched as they all sprinted past my brilliant hiding spot, heading towards the explosion. Once I counted off the last guard, I had my character take off his shoes, but not his socks, knowing they’d dull the sound of me running out of the building. Once I was out, the building, the words Operation 87 Complete popped up on the screen. I was shocked out of my game zone by the sound of gasps and realized with a jolt that I was being watched. I blushed before looking up at my brother who was smiling a little lopsided.
“That, gentlemen, is why I chose her as my apprentice,” Anthon said loudly. I was thoroughly confused by what he’d said. He gave me a look as if to tell me he’d explain later. After that, I got around eighty apologizes which I kindly declined and one offer, by the man who’d doubted me earlier, to cut themselves for me. Man, the look my brother gave that guy was colder than Antarctica. I think he “resigned” a month after that.
Once everyone had left, Anthon gave me a huge smile and hugged me tightly. I stood still, still quite confused as to what me playing a video game had to do with anything. It wasn’t even that fun not to mention the graphics where horrible. When he pulled back, he looked me straight in the eyes.
“You did great on that test, Honor. You see, the reason I had you do that was because you were actually controlling someone out in the field. Operation 87 has been unsuccessful in its tries since it first started and you’ve just killed, or severely injured, our biggest opponent.” I was in shock, although the first thing that popped into my head was, if that’s so then why didn’t they just give me a live feed? Then, I went through quite a few other questions which included why puppies were so adorable and kittens so fluffy before my ADHD brain actually grasped the fact that I killed that asshole. I killed, or seriously injured, him! Me, the youngest of the bunch. Not Nash the strong muscular one or Julian the smart one, well second smartest since I’m the one who could’ve skipped a few grades. It was me, the girl who would, in my father’s words, never amount to anything in this business. I smiled before returning Anthon’s hug; knowing that the twins weren’t going to forget this. I beat them this time and this victory would be fun to shove in their immature faces.
