... but we were in screaming color"
Soulmates. That's all people ever talked about. And about how beautiful life is supposed to be when you see it in colour. Meredith wasn't really bothered, she didn't mind seeing everything in black and white. She had been doing so since she was born and probably would until she died.
Only those who met their soulmate could see life in colour, and being 7 billion people in the world, it was quite rare to do so.
"C'mon! Aren't you even a little bit curious?" Lexie asked Meredith.
Lexie and Meredith were half-sisters. Meredith's dad had married Lexie's when his wife had left him. Meredith liked Lexie, she really did, she just thought she was always too happy.
"I just don't think there's any chance I'll get to meet my soulmate one day, so what's the point in getting my hopes up? You can find the love of your life and still be happy even if he's not your soulmate" said Meredith as she stopped walking to look at a library's showcase.
Lexie stopped by her side.
"But colours Meredith, colours! Imagine looking up at the sky and seeing its colour! I once read it changed color, from a colour apparently called light orange in the early morning to one called light blue and then to pink or purple as the sun sets down and a really dark blue, some people say black, when the sun's gone! Wouldn't you like to see that?"
Meredith smiled. She actually did. She'd love to. But she knew better than to get her hopes up because she knew it would never happen.
"Yes... I guess you're right Lex" she said as she got lost in her own thoughts.
"Anyway" said Lexie "are you excited?"
"Huh?" said Meredith as her sister forced her back to reality.
"Excited, about starting your internship tomorrow" clarified Lexie as she grabbed Meredith by the arm and started walking down the street again, leaving the library behind.
"Oh yes, very" said Meredith.
"There's this bar next to the hospital, I bet every doctor hangs out there, you could take a look around"
"Yeah, I might"
"You should"
When Lexie left, Meredith walked back to go back to the library. She stared from the outside, wondering if she should walk in or just forget about it. Maybe it just had been her imagination, but a few days ago she had been walking down this same street and had seen a man entering in that library, and it had seemed to her that he was wearing a blue shirt. Yes. Blue. She didn't even know how she knew what blue looked like. She just did. And the books in the showcase had showed a slight taint of... red maybe?
Meredith shook her head. She was probably going crazy. She blamed Lexie's constant talk about soulmates and colours. Besides, she was in the other side of the street when that had happened... The image of the man, whose face she hadn't even seen, with a slight tone of blue in his shirt crossed her mind. Was it really just her imagination or could it really be...
Her thoughts were interrupted by someone going into the library. She took advantage of the moment and slided in before the door closed.
The bell in the upper corner of the door rang once again as the door closed behind her. She sighed in disappointment when she noticed the man that had walked in before her was Mr. Thomas, her 70 year old neighbour.
"Meredith, darling" he said after clearing his throat "what are you doing here?"
"Goodmorning Mr. Thomas. I'm just here to buy some books"
