"C'mon, let's get going." Chase said as he lead the way through the forest.

Jacqueline ran up to my side. "I'm so happy that you're coming with us, Alex!" she squealed and grabbed my hand. I smiled and she smiled back.

"I'm happy too."

I snuck a glance at Chase, who was using his machete to cut through the leaves.

"Chase, where are we going?" I asked, trying to catch up to him, with Jacqueline still holding my hand.

"We're going to a high school." he answered without looking at me.

I grabbed his arm. "That's suicide!"

He yanked his arm away from my grip. "We'll take our chances."

I stared at him as he walked away. He had a very sour attitude. Then again, I couldn't blame him. We were fighting for our lives, alone. No parents. They never really told me, but I just assumed their parents died like mine, so I understood how he was feeling.

We walked a few more miles in silence until we reached the school. I twirled the ax in my hand.

"Are you sure you want to do this?" I asked, turning to Chase.

He nodded.

I took a deep breath and continued forward. We reached the gate and tried to open it.

"It's locked." I stated.

Chase turned around and gave me a look.

I shrugged. "I'm just saying."

"Well, don't 'just say'." He snapped.

Erica took her hair out of it's ponytail and handed Chase a bobby pin. He took it and began to work on the lock.

Erica grabbed my arm and pulled me away from Jaqueline and Chase.

She leaned closer and whispered. "Don't let him get to you. He's just upset because of what's going on. I wouldn't take it personally."

I nodded. "Yeah, I understand."

"I got it!" Chase yelled.

Erica walked back toward him and they all entered the gate.

I stood there, thinking.

Then I heard a menacing screech in the distance. I raised my ax above my head, ready to strike at anything that comes my way.

I glanced at the horizon. I squinted. Something was coming.

Oh no.

"Chase! Erica! They're coming!" I yelled running through the gate.

They stopped in their tracks and turned around.

"Quick, lock the gate!" I screamed.

Chase ran toward the gate, bobby pin in hand. He bent over and started fiddling with the lock. The zombies, hearing our screams, started to run in our direction. Dozens of them.

"Chase, hurry!" Erica cried.

Chase fiddled faster, glancing up at the zombies.

"They're coming!" Jaqueline squeaked.

They came closer and closer, inching toward us.

"Let me do it!" I yelled, pushing him out of the way.

I fiddled with the lock as the zombies came sprinting closer.

Click

I darted away from the gate just as a zombie came rushing toward me, screeching and reaching through the gate.

I fell on my butt, breathing hard. I looked at Chase. He was already glaring at me.

"Chase, I'm sorry-"

"Don't." he said raising his hand. He stood up and walked away.

I turned back to the zombie as it screamed and lashed its arms about. My heart was still beating fast as I stood up and picked up my ax.

Erica put her hand on my shoulder. Jacqueline looked pale.

I walked up to her and offered my hand.

"C'mon, Kiddo, we have to go."

She took my hand and stood up. Erica clocked her rifle, and we started toward the school building.

Once we caught up to Chase, he spoke.

"Look, we need to make sure all the exits are closed. Then we should be safe here."

"Maybe we should split up." Erica offered.

"No. Never split up. We need to stay together." Chase snapped.

Erica held up her hands in surrender.

Chase lead the way toward one of the buildings. "Stay by me."

I held up my ax and followed him, with Erica and Jacqueline close behind.

We checked all the exits, and they were all locked.

"Alright, it's safe. We should find a place to sleep." Chase said, turning to us.

He grabbed Jacqueline's hand and walked down the hall. We tried each and every door. All locked.

"I guess we'll have to sleep in the hall." I stated.

"No. We'll pick a lock." Chase answered.

I shrugged, but started to pick a lock on one of the doors. Within a minute, the door popped open.

We all walked inside and set our stuff down.

Jacqueline and Erica fell asleep instantly, leaving Chase and me alone together.

After what seemed like an eternity of silence, I sighed.

"Look, I don't know what I did to anger you, but whatever I did, I'm sorry," I fiddled with a ring on my right hand.

He looked away.

"Can we please just end this and get along?" I asked.

He sighed, then nodded. "Yeah."

"Great." I said, exhaling.

I looked back at him and saw that he was looking at me.

"What?" I asked.

He shook his head. "Nothing, you just remind me of someone."

I looked up. "Who?"

He shook his head. "Never mind, it's stupid."

I sighed and laid down on the floor. "Well, let's try to get some sleep then."
