two bold - almost unidentifiable - maroon hued lines appear to engrave an eternal image into your widened pupils, as you stare at the all-too-familiar pregnancy test that's barely balancing on your trembling palm.
you aren't afraid; devastated nor troubled by the news - in fact, you're ecstatic, overjoyed.
joshua, your charming fiancee and soon-to-be husband, and yourself, have been trying for a baby for almost three years now. with absolutely no luck, you feared the alternative of allowing science to work its wonders, instead.
all of the negative pregnancy tests, all of the desperate doctors appointments and hopeless phone calls with your gp, seem to have builded up to this moment.
instantly your mind diverts to joshua and the anticipation of his long-awaited reaction. you decide to turn the news into a surprise, just to make news more special.
it's his birthday in a few days, so you decide to incorporate the surprise into his gifts.

"thank you so much!" he smiles widely once he opens the cardboard box holding his brand new trainers, a pair that he had pointed out a few months ago when you and him were shopping together.
"there's a two more." you tell him, the anticipation bubbling inside of you.
"there's more?" he asks, eyes wide in excitement. you nod and pass him another present, which he opens right away.
it's a photo frame which holds the first ever photo that you took together. it just so happens that a few of the other boys - mingyu, seungkwan and minghao, to be specific - are also in the photo, photo-bombing you both. at the time, joshua was angry that his bandmates interrupted your first ever photograph together, but now, it's something that all of you laugh about together.
"thank you, this means so much." he says in appreciation, laughing slightly at the photograph itself. his pre-debut hair and long, orange shirt and your awkward smile and young features. it's cute, though.
"there's still one more." when you pass him the white box, you notice that your excited hands are trembling ever so slightly. luckily, he appears not to notice.
"what's this?" he frowns in confusion, an amused smile playing on his lips.
"open it." you urge, excitement flowing through each syllable.
you booked a doctors appointment on the same day you discovered the positive result, just to check there wasn't a mistake. sure enough, you're pregnant and you're almost a month along.
inside the box there's piles and piles of confetti and transparent silver gift paper. joshua looks up at you, confused before beginning to dig through to the bottom.
as soon as his eyes catch sight of the white pregnancy stick - which you ensured was completely clean before giving to him - he reaches for it and pulls it out of the box, which he quickly drops to the floor once he realises what he's holding.
"what..." he whispers, looking up at you and then back to the positive pregnancy test.
you can't restrain your wide smile as you notice a similar one spread across his surprised features. similarly to you, he stares at the two red lines until he can't un-see them anymore.
"oh my goodness, you're pregnant!" he cheers, and that's when you notice he's crying. "we're having a baby! oh my god, we're having a baby! finally i'm going to be a dad!"
he wipes his wet cheeks using the back of his hand and you can't help but giggle. he leans forward, the test still in his hand, and hugs you tightly.
"i don't want to hug you too tight," he says, loosening his grip ever so slightly. "i might hurt the little one."
"i don't think you're going to hurt him or her." you assure him with a smile.
"still," he giggles. "how far along are you? you don't look pregnant, jagi."
"around a month. i went to the doctors the day before yesterday, just to make sure."
"i think i'm the happiest man alive!" he cheers. "we've been waiting so long that it doesn't feel real!"
"i know, i'm so happy."
"me too," he smiles, hugging you again. "me too. i can't wait to tell the boys."
"why don't we tell them at your party tonight?" you suggest and his eyes light up impossibly brighter.
"that's an amazing idea!"

"thank you all for coming!" joshua speaks into the microphone.
"we didn't want to!" mingyu shouts jokingly from the seat beside you causing the whole room to laugh.
"thank you for that," joshua chuckles. "anyway, my fiancee and i have a very important announcement to make."
he catches your eye and you smile reassuringly. you then turn to watch the boys instead to watch their reactions when they find out.
"we're having a baby!"
all twelve of the boys turn to you with a smile, looking slightly shocked. then, everybody rushes over to both you and joshua to say congratulations and you thank everybody very gratefully.
"did i do okay?" joshua asks quietly once he jogs over to you.
"of course you did."
"do you want a drink?" he asks, turning around with a glass of wine in his hand. "oh, wait- you can't drink, you're pregnant. i'm sorry."
"don't rub it in!" you laugh, knowing it was accidental. "i'm okay with soda."
"do you think it's a girl or a boy?" he asks you over the music that plays loudly from the speaker.
"definitely a boy." you smile.
he shakes his head, "nope. i think you're carrying a little girl."
"boy."
"girl."
"boy-"
"hey, joshua!" seungcheol interrupts the bickering session. "come and dance with us!"
he turns to you before responding, "you coming?"
"it's okay, i'll just watch. go and have a good time!" you assure him.
"are you sure?" he asks and you nod.
"enjoy yourself, it's your birthday." you remind him and turn away, but he's quick to pull on your wrist to turn you around again.
"girl." he whispers cheekily and then follows his bandmate onto the dance floor.
