Serena

Three hours of doing the last bit of unpacking I stared out of my bedroom window. I could see the woods and so wanted to run and explore the new area. The sound of Hailey knocking brought my eyes away from the window. Her waist length raven dark hair was pulled into a messy ponytail, showcasing her heart shaped face and hazel eyes.

"Go do your thing Rena, I know you're dying to." The soft look in her eyes and use of my childhood nickname tugged at my heart.

She was the only one who knew what I was, not even my own family knew. When I was going through the change I was sleeping at her house while our parents were out having a double date. She had taken a nap due to the amount of energy she had used during the day. Leaving me able to slip outside, drawn by the pull of what I now know is the moon, and transform to my terrifying surprise. To scared and weak to move from the backyard she came out later to find me curled in a ball. She thought I was a lost dog at first, until she came close and saw my eyes. The same mossy green eyes that she grew up knowing. Not once was she scared of me, only concerned. From that day on when the full moon was coming, the day before and after it she would invite me over for a sleepover. So that I was closer to the woods and had a cover, she always had my back no matter what happened.

I looked at her to make sure she was serious, she nodded and I smiled thanking her for giving me the confidence.

The night was warm with the moon and stars shinning brightly against the inky black sky. I started off at a slow jog until I was out of the neighborhood and into the park that out skirted  the woods. Looking around and seeing no one I grinned and took off into the woods, running until I was deep into them and away from prying eyes. Finding a bush I undressed shoving all of it together under the green leaves. Grabbing the pendent I let the change take hold, letting my anxious wolf free.

The grass was soft under her paws, crisp and warm from the suns rays. She shook her fur and took off running, covering as much ground as she could. Nothing smelled like home, and it thrilled her senses. But one thing bugged her, there were odd smells she had never encountered. Wild and exotic, an animal whose scent mirrored her own. Her instincts told her to be weary of her surroundings, her hackles raised as she  traveled the thick woods.

When the scent of a rabbit caught her attention she grinned, the scent was strong which meant it was near. She slowly followed the trail, careful of where she stepped so she wouldn't alert the animal. When she heard rustling she stopped and smelled the air, only rabbit was prominent on the air. A bush a few feet ahead trembled as the brown animal jumped out of it. It was up wind and had no idea its end was so close.

Wanting a chase she stepped on a twig breaking it, the sound like a gunshot in the silence. The rabbit looked over then ran. She waited a second giving it a head start, when it was up she took off.

The woods were getting thinner as she chased it, making it easier to follow. Dodging trees and leaping over a few bushes the rabbit came into plain sight. She gave one final jump and landed on the rabbits back, pinning it to the ground with her front paws. The animal desperately kicked its hind legs wanting to be freed.

With one bite the kicking stopped, the soft brown fur stained with its blood. She savored the small animal, taking her time til all that was left was bones and tuffs of the ruined fur.

The moon was on its decent now, her human side pushed for her to start to head back. She whined but headed the warning, licking her mouth she turned and set off back home.

Her human scent filtered in as she arrived back to her humans clothes, she whined but gave her other side  control. Her eyes closed as she took a deep breath and stretched, the change making her limbs shift and elongate.

My breath escaped in a grunt of pain, shifting into human form while awake hurt. Sleeping for the change to happen wasn't something I did for normal runs. Being in a new area didn't help either, something about the woods set my nerves on edge.

Quickly getting dressed I jogged back home, needing a hot shower and mouthwash.
