"Kids, your father and I need to talk to you," my mom says slightly nervous breaking me away from my thoughts.
"What?" I ask.
"You know that I have to travel a lot for my job and we do not even make a lot of money," my dad starts off and I nod. "Well, I got a job offer to stay at home and make even more money."
"That's great!" I say.
"Cool!" my brother says.
"Yeah it is really cool, but that means that we would have to move houses," my mother adds on.
"Where do we have to go?" I ask concerned.
"California," my dad replies.
"California?!" Devan and I ask in unison.
"Yeah."
"I can't move to California! What about my friends? What about school? We wouldn't be able to see grandma and grandpa," I ask frantically.
"I know honey and I'm sorry, but this job is the best for our family. I would be making a lot more money and we have already looked at a house near the building I would work at. The house is two times the size of our house now."
"I-I don't know. I really want to stay here dad; I love it here," I say.
"Well, I'm excited! This will be awesome!" Devan exclaims.
"It will be like a fresh start," my mother says once again.
"When would we move?" I ask feeling tears welling up in my eyes.
"We would stay here until the end of the school year and then we would move to this really nice neighborhood in California," my dad replies.
"Oh, but I don't want to say goodbye to my friends."
"I know honey, but you can always make more friends."
"I am excited to have a new house and a new room, but I don't want to say goodbye."
"You could video chat with them, text them, or call them every day. You're a sweet girl; it will be easy to make friends."
"But I don't want to make new friends!" I exclaim.
"You'll only be living in this house for about a year before you go off to college."
"But I don't want to move! I want to stay here, I actually like it here," I whine and feel tears filling up in my eyes.
"We are moving and that's final," my mother says sternly and I sigh.
"Whatever," I say and storm off to the car throwing my ice cream out on the way; I am too angry to enjoy it now.
After a few minutes the rest of my family joins me in the car and we ride home in silence. When we arrive back at my house I run upstairs to my room. I collapse on my bed and just as I lay down the tears I've been bottling up overflow and run down my cheeks. I roll onto my stomach and cry into my pillow. After three minutes of crying my phone starts ringing. When I came in my room I dropped my phone on the floor so I look in the spot I dropped it at. My phone is still in the same spot, lit up and playing my favorite song I set as my ringtone.
"Hello?" I ask when I answer the phone and sniffle, trying to stop the tears.
"Hey Elizabeth," a voice says on the other side of the phone.
"Hi Sam," I sniff and wipe another tear off my cheek.
"Oh what's wrong?" he asks, concern in his voice.
"N-nothing..."
"I can hear you crying."
"M-my dad got a n-new job," I confess.
"That's incredible!" Sam says excitedly.
"Y-yeah, but it is in California," I say and more tears roll down my cheeks.
"Oh... So you're moving?" Sam says sounding more sad.
"Yep..."
"W-when?"
"In one month, at the end of the school year."
"At least you aren't leaving now. You get to say goodbye to your friends."
"Yeah, but I don't want to leave. I don't want to say goodbye to you. You're my best friend."
"I know, but you have to go. Just think about what's best for you and your family."
"I don't want to!"
"I know... Have they gotten a new house?"
"Yeah, and apparently our house has been up for sale for a few weeks now."
"Really? Have you seen the new house?" Sam asks.
"No, I haven't, but they said it is a lot bigger," I reply.
"Maybe you'll like it."
"I'm not sure..." I say.
"Elizabeth?" Sam asks.
"Yeah?"
"Please, just be optimistic about it. Maybe it isn't as bad as it seems. It might be a good thing."
"O-okay I'll try, but that doesn't make me want to leave."
"I don't want you to leave either but it will be okay. We can hang out for the next month and you can call me everyday or video call me."
"I know."
"It will be okay hun," Sam says.
"Thanks Sam. You're always there when I need someone."
"You're welcome. I'm always here for you," he replies.
"Thanks, and I'm here for you."
"Thanks."
