I tore the page from my journal and crumpled it up before tossing it into the trash can with the rest that just didn't cut it. My curtain lifted up and a breeze passed through my room, causing stray papers to fly off of my desk. Frustrated, I stood up and marched over to my grand window. I reached up to close my window when I noticed my neighbor, Ethan Dolan sitting on his roof. Him and his twin brother were known for being the town's bad boy's but I've lived next to them my entire life and their anything but.
"Going to sleep so early, Princess?"
"No, but even if I am, it's really not any of your business."
"Feisty. I like it."
"Do you have something better to do?"
"Than talk to you? Not really."
I smiled and shook my head, "Goodnight, Ethan."
"Wait!" The window was half-way shut when I heard him yell.
Sticking my head through the gap I spoke, "Yes?"
He motioned for me to join him and I thought about it. The only way to get there was to cross a 7 ft. branch that couldn't have been more than 2 feet in girth. "Aww, are you scared?"
Almost immediately, I answered, "No!"
He smirked and sat up, "Then prove it."
Standing up on my window ledge, I gripped the frame above me. Calculating in my head I figured it would take no more than six or seven steps. The only problem was that I'm ridiculously clumsy. This is the very reason I thrived in academics and not sports. Once I got to the end of the branch, I just needed to pull myself a foot or so in the air. You got this, Sally.
I took a deep breath and exhaled before stepping out onto the surprisingly sturdy branch. My hands were in front of me, ready to grab onto the branch if I lost my balance. Ethan said something but I was too focused on not falling to hear him. The gutter was within reach and I lurched forward to grab it but hit my foot on a protruding knot in the wood instead. There was nothing else to latch on to and a brief squeal left my lips in panic. Instead of preparing myself to fall onto the grass that was roughly 14 feet below me, a pair of strong hands grabbed me by my elbows and slowly pulled me onto the roof.
We both fell onto our backs and a moment of silence passed before the two of us broke out into a fit of laughter.
Once we finished laughing, we sat up and looked over our neighborhood. It was a peaceful moment.
"You know, I'm really glad you joined me. I was starting to get lonely."
"I'm glad I joined you too."
