Lunch with a bunch

At lunch I eat with Sadie, Nadia, Shane, and Peter. A bit about Sadie: she's my best friend. She lives a few houses down from me and frequently comes over for serial killer tv marathons. Sadie's really pretty and is dating Jason, a football player who seems nice enough.

Nadia and Shane are dating and its a really cute thing because they're like a power couple. Nadia runs track and gets straight As, Shane's dad is a pastor and he's on the ultimate frisbee team. They both met in their AP World History class.

Peter's quiet but when he talks I listen. Always. He and Shane are best friends because they both like video games and Shane's kind of quirky. I ask Peter about his skateboarding.

"Did you get any new tricks?" And he smiles his lady-balls-kicking smile and says,

"I got an FS Smith. I've been working on it for a while." I struggle not to start wheezing because his smile seriously knocks the air from my lungs. And then I decide that I should be a nice friend and say,

"Peter, do you maybe wanna hangout Friday? We could catch a movie or something, maybe hang out at home." Please say yes. Please say yes. Sadie nudges me a little and grins. This is why we're best friends. But Peter grimaces a bit and says,

"Sorry, Sara. I'd love to but I already made plans with some friends to see a movie." I try not to look disappointed because that'd be lame as hell and also Peter looks genuinely conflicted.

Shane and Nadia are holding hands and give me this small pity smile. I flinch and can't help but wonder if they know how much I like Peter. I hope not because that'd be really weird.
