The Rage of Fire

I guess you could say that I have seen death in all its glory. Raining from all sides, there was no escaping it, but as good as any parents would do, my father and mother tried anyway. I knew I would never survive. I was the weakest, the smallest, the dumbest. All because I was a girl and girls weren't suppose to be good at anything. Everyday, I was reminded of the fact, so much so that it was drilled into my head and became this repeated mantra in my mind. I don't know why my parents decided to keep me as a babe instead of leaving me to die, but I never asked to know the answer. Better not to know the truth.

Girls were always in the wrong, I had learned at a young age. They were never allowed any sort of power or authority. Girls were suppose to stay home, raise the children, cook the meals, and provide the man everything they wanted. They were suppose to have proper manners, dressing habits, and strict obedience. Girls were lovely to look at but worthless to be able to do anything right.

Mother wasn't even suppose to be on the ship at all. It was as a crew, the men had decided to keep all woman off, to avoid distractions and fights. But my father was the captain, and whatever he says goes. You see, it wasn't normal for a pirate, much less a captain, to ever care for a woman the way my father loved my mother. He would say to me that he would do anything for her, even sail to the ends of the earth just to make sure she was happy and safe. But never had my mother been on the ship until that horrible night.

The night where fire consumed everything it touched and smoke choked every soul. It was like a raging dragon; a god delivering a punishment without a twinge of mercy.

They had found us.

The sound of the cannons made my ears ring so loud, I couldn't hear anything other than the beat of my own heart. Slowly, my hearing gradually came back. I heard my name being called out, soft at first, but as my hearing came back, I realized the voice was screaming my name.

"VIVIAN! VIVIAN!"

"I'm here," I said, but my voice was raw and it hurt when I spoke. I got up from where I had fallen and searched for my parents. I knew by his voice that it was my father calling for me. I looked from side to side, but all I saw were the flames of the monster that would soon destroy me.

The smoke invaded my lungs and clouded the fresh air so I couldn't breath right. My tears stung my eyes and face. I closed my eyes against my fear. I was all alone.

"VIVIAN! VIV! WHERE ARE YOU!" my father screamed from somewhere on the ship. His voice was louder, so he must have been nearer. The sound of my father's voice crept inside my head and jerked me back to the present. My eyes snapped open.

"Father! I'm here! I'm here, Father!" I tried to yell the loudest I could and my voice was scratchy and broke in the middle of my cries.

It was only a moment later that my father appeared at my side. His rough, short beard was burnt in patches and his arms were crusted in ashes and burns. His face was scarred and bleeding, there were tears racing down his cheeks. In all my years, I had never once seen my father cry, and it scared me. Somehow I just knew that my mother didn't survive the first cannon fire attack. I was too high strung to think about that, I would mourn for her later.

Even with the burns, scars, ash, and tears, my father's eyes were the same, the steady precision and determination flaring to it's highest. So much determination, that I wouldn't doubt that if he tried to fly and was successful. As he gathered me in his arms, I felt his strength in his muscles and the safeness that came with it. Life on land with my mother had been a living nightmare for me. Girls couldn't do anything there. I had tried to play with the boy's, but they would tell me that I couldn't, that I was stupid for even asking.
