"I'm not leaving forever! I'll be back. I just have to go for a while. I love you! Nothing is going to change that. Well make it through this babe. I promise you that," he whispered into her hair while hugging her. "Why are you crying? Please stop.."
She shrugged and tried, but her tears wouldn't stop. She didn't want to let him go. She couldn't. She didn't know why, but she just couldn't say goodbye. She hugged him tight, begging him to stay. But he didn't. He pulled away and stared at her for a few moments longer, while wiping her tears away.
"Goodbye," he whispered.
"Goodbye," she choked out through her tears.
He kissed her one last time before turning and walking away.
When he came back several months later, and told her they couldn't be together anymore, because "life had taken them different directions", she finally understood.
"I cried that day. When you left, because somehow I knew. I knew you wouldn't keep your promise. I think people cry when they say goodbye to someone, because the person leaving never comes back the same," she whispered to him. "You didn't come back the same.." she trailed off.
A tear streamed down her cheek, and he just walked away.
