If it weren't for the dark shadow sitting to my right, this would be an ordinary weekend with my best friend and her boyfriend. Amarissa and Kevin were still kissing and cooing over each other. I would have tuned out of the scene five minutes ago if this had been any other couple, but Amarissa's goofy smile warmed my heart. She had her dream romance and I had a front-row seat to watch it play out.
Light filtered through a stained-glass window gave the lovebirds' reunion a magical quality. I'd always admired the way the glass-based flowers cast colourful mosaics on the floor. Amarissa and I would try to catch them when we were little.
Now it was the lover's turn to dance among painted flowers. His muscular arms spun her around with ease. Her light followed him. They seemed to be in their own little world, dancing to music I couldn't hear. I watch them out of a sense of fascination.
The shadow, otherwise known as Peregrine Romane, watched the same scene with mild interest, occasionally sipping a diet soda. His soul-piercing eyes weren't doing much piercing now. The lips that wished to speak stayed silent. I wouldn't respond if they did; his trust failed me before.
Pushing my focus towards the couple, I built a mental wall between Peregrine and myself. Amarissa touched Kevin's arm as he whispered something in her ear. Probably another sappy statement.
She pushed him back, her smile melting. "Kevin, I know you're not going to answer my calls. You never do!"
That's my cue. I headed over to Amarissa.
Kevin spoke before I could. "I have practice between four and six. I can't answer your calls then."
"He answered your call this morning." I rubbed Amarissa on the back.
Peregrine pointed to Kevin. "We have two water breaks. You could call her then."
"I'm getting water during those breaks."
"All the time?" My tone flattened. "I doubt it. Do you want your girlfriend or do you want your game?"
Kevin ran his fingers through his short hair. "Both."
Peregrine stood, the hand that scores touchdowns pointed at his best friend. "And you can get it if you work for it."
Amarissa stuck out her tongue. "See?"
"You need to respect that your boyfriend won't be able to pick up 24/7." I turned Amarissa towards Kevin. "Now apologize."
"I love you, and I'm sorry."
"Me too." Kevin hugged her.
Peregrine mouthed "Thanks."
The only part of me that responded were my legs, which carried me back to the leather couch. When I sat down, quiet, he got the hint.
Amarissa and Kevin returned to their blissful land as if nothing ever happened. They're just as inseparable as they were at homecoming. There are occasional spats. If they paid as much attention to the consequences of their actions as I did, none of those little spats would have happened.
Maybe I shouldn't talk about consequences. I caused this SNAFU in the first place.
