"And turn, two, three, four..."
Rebecca walked around the class, inspecting each student on how well their toes were pointed or how high their legs lifted. I followed along to the dance routine, elegantly moving to the soft piano music. "Louis, stretch further. I know you're short but you can reach further than that," Rebecca joked as she came across me. "Of course," I acknowledged, taking her advice. She continued studying everyone as I stared at myself in the reflection.
I know what you're thinking — a boy in ballet? Get used to it. It's 2019, shouldn't stereotypes be crushed by now? Admittedly, I wasn't so keen on it at first. But after one lesson, not only did I realise that I was good at it, but I enjoyed it. I was the best in the class.
Well, one of the best. This other boy in my class is a total fluke. His name is Harry Styles and his posture is so off. He's too tall and lanky to be good at ballet. For some reason, everyone thinks he's this master, though. I'm the master! I can pirouette longer than he can, hold my balance and point my toes further.
Sure, he's been doing it since he was six, but I've been doing this since I was fourteen. I'm eighteen now and in just four years, I'm incredibly talented.
That came off a bit cocky, sorry.
"And assemblé!" Rebecca yelled as everyone moved. "Chassé, chassé and pose." I held my arms slightly bent above my head whilst my feet rested perfectly still in the third position. I pursed my lips (for dramatic effect) and stared right into my reflection. "Well done, class," Rebecca praised, placing a hand on her hips. "You may take a break and then I'll talk to you about your upcoming recital."
Everyone gathered up, sitting in a circle, beginning to talk and chatter among their friends. I, however, continued to stretch along a bar. "Hey," Cara greeted when she walked over to me.
"Hello, Cara," I cheerfully replied, bending my knees. She sat down in the circle. "You know, Rebecca said to take a break, which means you don't have to overwork yourself."
I chuckled, touching my toes. "Well, I happen to be a person who likes to overwork myself." Cara smiled up at me, "at least have one of top quality chicken sandwiches."
"Sure, I'll take up on that offer," I responded. And in a split second, Harry and Elena were sitting down next to Cara. Now, I love Elena as a friend, but her best friend aside from Cara is Harry. See my struggle?
"Hey, Cara. Hey Louis," Elena said as she sat down. Harry avoided my gaze as he spoke. "Hey, Cara," he said, obviously trying to set me off. I looked away, "Hello, Elena."
I could see Cara and Elena exchanging glances, raising their eyebrows at each other. I knew they hated when Harry and I acted like this. But we couldn't help it.
"Are you guys excited? Big recital coming up," she said before squealing in excitement. We all nodded and agreed.
The winter showcase was the biggest recital of all. The top-level class (also known as my class) gets to perform in front of a massive crowd. It's the performance that really defines whether or not you're good at ballet. I'm going to steal the show, I'll be the star. Not Harry.
