Saturday was Dean Winchester's favourite day of the week. No school. No chores. No worries. His Saturday usually consisted of watching "The Ren & Stimpy Show," "Rocko's Modern Life," or, "Animaniacs." His dad was usually working the day shift at the mechanic shop and his mom works the night shift at the hospital. Dean's ten year old brother, Sam, was always out with his friends playing on their Sega; his friend, Gabe, just got the new Virtua Fighter game and would refuse to play it without Sam present.
As Dean sat on the couch and waited for his new favourite show, "Legends of the Hidden Temple," to come on, his mother intersected his view of the tv set. She was putting in a pair of, what Dean would call, her "fancy" earrings.
"Dean, sweetie, mommy and some of her friends are going out tonight because I finally got a day off. Sam is staying at Gabriel's house and your father is out with his friends," Mary spoke, still blocking the view from the tv. Dean nodded and tried to look around her at the beginning of "Legends of the Hidden Temple."
"Naomi is going to join us tonight, Dean. I need you to babysit Castiel." Dean snapped his gaze away from the sliver of television he could see to look at his mother.
"Babysit," Dean questioned, "I hate babies."
"Dean, Castiel is only two years younger than you and he cannot stay home alone. This stays between you and I, but he is terrified of being left alone." Mary explained, biting the inside of her cheek.
"He really is a baby."
"Dean! The last time he was left alone, he was trying to get a book off the bookshelf by climbing it. The shelf fell on top of him and his mom did not get home for another hour. Don't give him a rough time, okay?" Dean rolled his eyes and crossed his arms.
"Fine."
"Thank you. Naomi said she would give you five dollars if Castiel had good time. Please be on your best behaviour. I stopped by Blockbuster and rented Mrs. Doubtfire. I also bought some Jiffy Pop, Charleston Chews, and a pop for you two."
"When is he coming over?" Dean asked, unfolding his arms.
"He should be here any minute now." Mary walked over to the door, leaving Dean to finally watch his show, to look out of the peep hole. She noticed someone turning up her driveway.
"Ah, this must be them," Mary enthusiastically spoke, opening the door to greet Castiel and his mother. Dean rolled his eyes and continued to stare at the television. He wasn't paying attention though. He was trying to listen to his mom and Naomi talking. It was hard to hear because he was on the couch and the door was only open a fraction of an inch or so.
"Dean's right on inside if you want to go say hi, Castiel," Mary smiled, opening the door to reveal the thirteen year old sitting on the couch.
Castiel stepped into the room and Mary closed the door behind him but not before she and Naomi said bye. Castiel was wearing a hemp necklace, striped ski sweater, carpenter jeans, and some very unappealing thick laced shoes. His eyes were blue as the ocean and he had the typical middle parted bowl cut that was apparently all the rage. Dean found it odd.
The two boys stared at each other for a moment before Dean decided to break the silence.
"Well, my mom rented a VHS. You want to watch it?" Dean asked, getting up to go find the video.
