The door to my room was bolted up with a large padlock. I shuffled in my hospital bed, the metal bed frame evident, poking through the thin mattress, making it uncomfortable to lay upon. From behind the door, I heard doctors and psychiatrists rushing around with files and exchanging words about the escapist. I simply sighed, bored from all of the drama, and settled down on the scratchy bed sheets. Who would be escaping now?
Todd's thoughts immediately dispersed once he heard the bolt on his door being cracked. He sat upright very slowly, interest on the paint peeling from the walls. The door swung open with a sudden creak, and in walked Rachael. His eyes widened and his jaw slacked as she stepped forward with her arms outstretched. He soon found himself running, running with their bare feet slapping the marble floor. They ran swiftly, hiding the view of the doctors and cameras littering the corners of the halls. The intercom ran out saying "Send doctors and tranquillisers to corridor 7 immediately!" Their breath was ragged as the doors behind them swung open, doctors armed, guns a hand with supposed tranquillisers. It felt like needles were puncturing their lungs the faster and further they ran. They ran corridor after corridor, their legs almost giving way beneath them. Behind them, the doctors were gaining on them. Everything went in slow motion as Todd watched Rachael buckle forward, a needle at the back of her neck. She lifted her arm to the back of her neck, pulling the needle out and gripping it between her fingers tightly. Before anyone could react, she launched the needle into the face of the doctor running straight towards her. It landed painfully in his eyelid, slicing through his eye. He fell onto his front feet, clutching both his hands over his eye and screaming in agony. Many of the other doctors ran forward, one fishing out a bandage from their pocket and wrapping it over his eye and around his head.
When Todd finally gripped his senses, it came back too quickly. Beside him, Rachael was clenching and unclenching her fists. In the distance, an ambulance siren ran out and paramedics rushed through the doors, a few of them carrying a portable bed thing, I never really paid attention to the names of things in the hospital. Rachael linked our fingers and yanked my arm to run with her. We sprinted through the doors, our legs burning with thrill and exhaustion, but we didn't stop until we reached the field opposite the hospital. When we thought we were far enough in to not be chased, we collapsed in the tall grass, it flattening beneath our weight. Todd was taking gulp fulls of breath, whereas Rachael looked as if she hadn't been running. He just stared at her, a look of confusion, worry and anger bubbling in the pit of his stomach. His emotions were all over the place, so he did what he knew best.
He laughed.
