When I woke up, I had no idea where I was or what had happened to me. The last thing I remembered was holding onto the side of my family's helicopter as we landed on the roof of my father's building. I sat up slowly, a pain coursing through my body. I looked down to where I thought the pain had come from and saw a bandage wrapped around my chest. I was no longer wearing a dress; instead I had a sports bra and gray sweatpants on. In one spot underneath my bandage, it was dark red with fresh blood. Without causing anymore pain, I started to look around at my surroundings.
I was in a concrete room with a door in the left corner of the room. There was a faint light hanging from the ceiling above me. I adjusted myself on the floor and felt a chain wrapped around my ankle. I looked down and saw that the chain was welded to the floor. It had a lock around it, holding the chain on my ankle. I only had two feet of chain to move around with.
I slowly stood up, wincing as my wound became irritated as it rubbed against the bandage. As soon as I stood up, I heard the door in front of me unlock and open. I looked in that direction and saw a man with a grey mask standing in the doorway.
"Melanie Teslar," said the man in a deep voice, "Are you healing well?"
I looked at him, my face showing no sense of emotion or comprehension. I would not answer him until I knew what was going on.
"I am here to take you to the doctor. She wants to assess your wounds." said the man. I watched him as he walked into my prison cell and kneeled down on the ground by my ankle. He pulled out a set of keys and unlocked the lock on my chains. As soon as I felt the chain fall, I lifted my leg and kneed the man in the face. He fell backwards in surprise. I ran to the door, the pain in my chest growing. I heard the guard quickly get up behind me and chase after me. With all my remaining strength, I bolted away from him and closed the heavy door behind me. I heard the sound of a lock as it closed. With the sense of accomplishment running through my veins, along with the adrenaline, I bolted down the hallway to a door that said EXIT above it.
"Someone stop her!" screamed the guard, but it was too late. I opened the door, feeling the rush of cold air outside. The sky was purple as the sun rose. I took a deep breath and continued to run. There was a large expanse of woods in front of me; a perfect escape. The ground was covered in thick white snow, making it difficult to run. But I trudged on, forcing myself through the cold. I had to get home, no matter how far away I was. Just as I reached the woods, I heard a loud bang and then black surrounded my vision. As I fell to the ground, my shoulder felt as if it was melting in molten metal. I hit the snow with a thud, my body tensing to the coldness of the white powder. Within seconds, the blackness took over and I was enveloped in darkness.
