A QUICK BREAK FROM HATE TO BRING YOU, "COLORED: A PHAN AU".
Dan had been single for an excruciatingly long amount of time. He hadn't even had a friend for so long it made him feel pathetic. Worthless. You see, Dan lived in a world where everything was black and white. He was like a dog, one with a muzzle, at that. He felt helpless. Only when he met his true love would he be able to see in color. He couldn't wait for that day, yet, deep down he knew it would never come.
"I'm not good enough." He told himself. Again and again, "No one could ever love me."
And then...Phil. This beautiful ray of sunshine waltzed into his daily life, lighting it up with blinding colors. And Dan couldn't have asked for anything better.
Slowly, yet surely, they fell in love. Phil became all that he lived for, his light in the dark, his world, his angel bean.
Every night, before they went to bed, Dan would lean over and in the sweetest, softest voice sing, "You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy, when skies are grey. You'll never know, dear, how much I love you. Please don't take my sunshine away."
Phil would smile and say, "So long as you never leave me."
---
"I'm gonna be late for work, Phil!" Dan spat, in the middle of a heated argument with his lover.
"Then leave! See if I care!" Phil screeched, shoving Dan out of the doorway.
Dan grumbled in annoyance as he fumbled with his car keys. His boss would flip out if he was late again.
---
Dan sat at his desk, feeling rather guilty.
Flowers. I'll buy him flowers. And sweets. I'll apologise for our fight, and we can play Mario Kart on our couch.
He planned to make up with Phil for their ridiculous argument. To be honest, he didn't even recall what they'd been fighting about. All he knew was he wanted to make up with Phil as soon as possible.
He was just walking out of his work when he noticed something was...off. He ignored it at first, but as the feeling became more and more intense, he just couldn't shake it off. He was about to check the news on his phone, when his ringtone jolted him out of his thoughts as it vibrated relentlessly, signifying a call.
"Hello?" He questioned as he answered the call.
"Dan?" The voice on the other end asked.
"Yes, who is this?" Dan questioned, confused. He had figured it was PJ, calling to tell him about the specifics of a party he was planning on throwing, but the voice definitely didn't sound like PJ's.
"It's Tyler, but that's not important right now! Listen. Dan, it's an emergency. Phil's...Phil's in the hospital, Dan." Tyler answered, clearly holding back tears, but by the sounds escaping from the voice on the other line, that wasn't working out very well.
Wait...Emergency?! Phil? In the hospital? "W-What's wrong with h-him?" Dan asked, voice cracking.
"He was at a flower sho-op when this guy came in with a gu-un. He started threatening people, and p-pointed his gun at a little gi-irl. Phil jumped in front o-of the girl just as the man pulled the trigger. Da-an...he's d-dying." Tyler explained, barely being able to speak between shaky breaths.
"Oh my G-God." Dan stuttered, shaking. "I-I'll be ri-ight there."
He ran to his car faster than he had ever ran before. His legs ached and his lungs burned, but he kept running until he reached his car. He sped. He drove like a maniac, and he didn't care.
He finally reached the hospital, crying and forcing out each heavy breath. He raced to Phil's hospital room after talking to the lady at the front desk, and flung the door open.
"Phil!" Dan choked out, running over to Phil and clinging to him like his life depended on it. "I'm s-so sorry fo-or our dumb argu-ument. I d-didn't mean any-ything I said! I love you!"
"I know you didn't, Dan. I love you too." Phil smiled softly as slow tears trickled from his eyes.
"Is there a-anything I ca-an do?" Dan asked. He just wanted to make Phil happy.
"Can you...Can you sing our song for me?" Phil pleaded.
"Of course." Dan smiled as he wiped his tears and took a few deep breaths so his breathing would calm. He fluttered his eyes shut as he sang, "You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy when skies are grey. You'll never know, dear, how much I love you. Please don't take my sunshine away."
When he opened his eyes, he looked back down towards Phil. He saw a shaky smile from Phil and a simple, "Thank you." could be heard slipping out of his chapped lips, like a secret never to be told to anyone else. "I love you." Phil closed his eyes as the heart monitor slowly rose to a high, blank, "Beeeeeeeeeeeep." as the line suddenly went flat.
"No...No...NO! PHIL! DOCTOR! DOCTOR, HELP!" Dan shouted as he draped himself over Phil's still body, clutching the sheets. And as the doctors tore him away, he looked up to see a world in black and white.
THE END.
