“W-what?” I gasped in breathless confusion, staggering a few steps backwards in the gathering dusk and tugging my sweatshirt closer to my icy skin. Aiden inched towards me, his reassuring brown eyes glinting in the fading orange sunlight. Wait...he said his name is Ethan. Oh my god does Aiden have split personality disorder or something? I backed up even further, preparing myself to flee. No amount of pouty lips and adorable dimples could convince me to hang around with a lunatic at seven o’clock at night.
“No, don’t go. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to frighten you. I thought you knew - Aiden is my twin. My name is Ethan Masters,” the guy in front of me said, spreading his hands out in front of him and offering me a charming, playful grin that went a long way in convincing me from kneeing him in the nuts and hightailing it down the street.
“Um...okay.”
“I’m very pleased to be meeting you, Devin. Aiden told me he’d met his dream girl today, but I hadn’t believed him until now.”
Is he flirting with me? I wondered, stretching my hand out to shake his warm one and allowing the barest hint of a smile to play around the edges of my lips. So far, I liked Ethan better than Aiden.
“I can’t imagine why he would say that; I made a total ass of myself in front of Aiden,” I admitted, laughing softly at my own expense while I brushed a piece of my dark hair back behind my ear. Ethan threw his head back in a deep-throated chuckle, and I snuck a quick glance at his sculpted chest, which was on full display in his tight white t-shirt. The brown leather jacket that he had on did nothing to hide his defined muscles, and I felt butterflies scatter all over my body. Damn.
“That’s not the way he tells it,” Ethan assured me, stepping forward to take my duffle bag from where it was sliding down my shoulder and sling it over his own back. When his fingers brushed against the exposed skin on the side of my neck, goosebumps broke out and a heated blush flared up in my cheeks. So why is Aiden’s twin brother flirting with me when Aiden called me his “dream girl”? And why would Aiden say that about me? I was a total idiot in front of him.
“Thanks.”
“So tell me, Devin. What did you think of my brother today?”
“Um, well...I only talked to him for like half a second but um...he seemed really cool. A little too confident for someone like me, but still pretty nice.”
“Too confident?”
“You know...the instant-popularity type,” I shrugged, trying to remember which way to turn as we approached the end of the street up ahead. I think it’s left. But if I go left, I’ll have to bump into Ethan to signal that we’re going left. Or I could just tell him...but wouldn’t that seem odd if I interrupt our conversation to tell him which way to turn?
“Trust me, my brother is not the instant-popularity type. As a general rule, he despises people. Social events, public speaking, and just casual chit-chat are some of his worst fears.”
“Really? With his good looks, I’m sure he’ll be in with the popular crowd in no time.”
“You think he’s good-looking?” Ethan turned left without me having to say anything or even nudge him at all, and I regarded him in mild shock. Oh great...now I’ve told him I think his brother is attractive. Couldn’t I just have embarrassed myself with one of the Masters’, not both?
“Uh, I mean, I guess.”
“I’ll make sure to pass on the message,” Ethan teased, bumping me with his shoulder. Rolling my eyes at him, I changed the subject by asking him a question about himself, and from there we talked back and forth for nearly twenty minutes. I found out that he and Aiden had moved to Beacon Hills with their foster family, which consisted of the girl Kali that had been in my class with Aiden earlier, an older guy named Ennis who was a senior, and their foster father, Deucalion. I told him about my parents being in India for work, and my older brother Luke who was also away.
“Wait so you’re home by yourself? For how long?” Ethan asked, a concerned wrinkle marring his otherwise smooth forehead.
“Not long. Just four days...Luke comes back on Saturday.”
“You shouldn’t be staying in your house alone. It’s dangerous,” Ethan told me seriously as we came to a stop on the front steps of my large, four-bedroom house. Every window was dark, and there was no sign of life inside the house until I pushed my key through the lock and flipped on the hall light. Turning to say goodbye to Ethan, I was shocked when I saw him step over the threshold and wander down the hallway, into the kitchen.
“Ethan! What are you doing?” I cried, closing the door and following him into my living room uneasily. I’d just met this guy after all, and no amount of charm and boyish grins would make me trust him so quickly.
“Just checking to make sure you’ll be safe tonight. You really should get one of your friends to stay here with you,” he replied as he reappeared from searching the living room and stood in front of me with his hands in his jeans’ pockets. I nodded quickly, suddenly wanting nothing more than for Ethan to insist that he stay the night to make sure I was safe. Wait what? NO. I barely know this guy. What is wrong with me?
“Um, well, thanks for your concern, Ethan. I’ll see you tomorrow at school?” I suggested as politely as possible as I led him to the front door and ushered him out. Ethan’s warm hand landing on my shoulder as I retreated back into the house almost made me wet my pants, and I turned around with a gasp.
“What the hell, Ethan?” I cried, trying not to notice the kindness he was projecting from his soft brown eyes. He pulled me into a quick hug, his warmth encircling my lanky body and making me feel safe and secure for a brief moment.
“I’ll come pick you up for school tomorrow. No girl should be walking these streets alone.” Before I could protest, Ethan had stepped away and was hopping down the steps until he reached the sidewalk. I watched him from my doorway until his shadow disappeared around the corner, and then I retreated into the relative comfort of my house and locked the door. Even though he’d seemed to be flirting with me, Ethan had said that Aiden had interest in me. Was he just being nice? Or was he flirting? Maybe Stacy and Payton will know. After all, twins are so not my thing, I thought as I poured myself a glass of orange juice and headed upstairs to shower. It had been a long, confusing day that needed several hours of processing before I could make any clear decisions.
