"Loser" The girl pushed the boy beside her jokingly.
"Lame-o" the boy replied pushing her back. He looked down at her with a smirk.
"Oh shut up Alec!" The girl said laughing. Alec held his hands up defensively.
"Come now, Becca. I'm hilarious and you know it." Alec said as he kept walking. Becca pursed her lips trying not to laugh. Alec had always been able to make her laugh just by looking at her. He was her best friend, always had been always would be. Some people would assume they were dating but it wasn't like that. He was like her brother, she loved him and she was pretty sure he felt the same. They insulted each other, flipped each other off, had full on scream fights over nothing, and always ended up on their backs laughing like they were mental. Alec slung his arm around her shoulder and pulled her to his side.
"You know, I applaud whoever beat the shit out of that Bryan kid." Alec said. "Totally deserved it." Becca ducked her head and blushed.
"Yeah... wonder what he did..." she said quietly. Alec looked at her sideways. "Whatever, it doesn't matter." Becca said, regaining her usual attitude.
"So..." Alec mused, drawing out the o. "Found anyone who'd take you to the big school shindig...?"
"Ok first" Becca said rolling her eyes. "Shindig? What is this? The forty's? Second no. I thought we would just go together, like we did every shindig". She looked at Alec questioningly. Now Alec ducked his head.
"We will... if you want. I just thought maybe you wanted to go with... ugh I don't know. A boyfriend or something?" Alec stumbled over his words. Becca couldn't help it, she laughed.
"Alec, I don't have a boyfriend, you know that." She told him as if he were crazy. "And besides its not like the offers are rolling in or anything." Becca mumbled. With her chestnut hair that refused to lay down and behave, big frame glasses, slightly more than curvy body, and less than lady like demeanor, the boys were not exactly lining up with roses and wedding rings. Becca stopped walking and turned to face Alec.
"Wait..." something occurred to her. "You... you don't have a ... a girlfriend, do you?" Becca asked blushing.
"No! No of course not Becca! I swear!" Alec started blushing too. "Would... would you care if I did?" He stammered.
"Well... no of course not." Becca turned away. They both just stood there in the school parking lot, faces beet red, hands in their pockets.
"Nerd..." Alec smiled. Becca looked up.
"Dickhead" she laughed. Alec grabbed her arm and squeezed her into a hug. Becca wrapped her arms around his tall frame. His hand started making small circles on her back. His face turned serious. He pulled away and cupped her face with his hand.
"Becca..." Alec said, his eyes searching her face. "Becca... I-"
"Alec Kazimir Sokolov?" Said a deep voice behind them. The use of Alec's full Russian name startled both of them. Only Alec, his mother, father, and Rebecca knew. And she had to practically beat it out of him when they were 9.
"Yes...?" Alec replied warily, turning around. The voice belonged to a man with a chiseled face and dark hair. He must have been at least 6' 5". He was dressed in a red suit with a black shirt and tie. His eyes were covered by dark sunglasses. The man was sitting in the driver seat of a large black van.
"Khvatay yego." The man said in Russian to someone in the back. Alec started pushing Becca behind him.
"Alec! What-" Becca stammered, frightened.
"Becca stay behind me." Alec commanded, cutting her off.
"What?! Why?! What did he sa-?" A second man got out of the van. He looked at Alec and raised a gun.
"Vy poydete s nami." He said. He grabbed Alec's arm and pressed the gun to his head. A third man came up behind Becca and grabbed her.
"No! Don't touch her!" Alec screamed.
"Alec!" Becca cried. The man with Alec took the safety off his gun. Becca felt something snap inside her. Before she knew what she was doing she had elbowed the man holding her in the nose. She heard a crack. Becca started running for Alec.
"Becca!" Alec tried struggling out of the man's grip, but to no avail. The man raised his gun and pointed it at Becca. He smirked.
"Sorry lady."
There was a stinging pain in her shoulder that spread through her body. Time slowed. She saw rather than heard Alec scream her name. She saw the fire that lit inside his eyes. The man that had been holding Becca had to help hold Alec down, blood streaming from his nose. She didn't feel herself hit the concrete, but saw the men pushing Alec inside the van. She screamed his name, the only thing in her mind. The last thing she saw before her eyes closed was the other half of her heart, her soul, half of her struggling against the men holding him screaming her name, never to be seen again.

Well there's the prologue. Exciting, hate it, love the characters? Thoughts people! I also seriously recommend looking up the translation to those Russian words used. That's not the last time you'll have to do that, by the way.
