Chapter 1

8 2 1

To be honest, I wasn't expecting to live in a cardboard box. Then again, I don't think anyone is really prepared for this kind of thing.
Here I was at the age of fifteen when my troubles should be get a good mark on the exams and find someone to go out with. Instead I was stuck worrying about what my next meal would be and how to get some cash.
My dad left me when I was little and my mom turned into a bubbling alcoholic mess. So with no one to pay the bills and whatnot because dear ol' mumsy was wasting her money on liquor, I ran away onto the streets to survive.
     It's better than home.
Me and my sister have been on the run from the law for three years now, ever since they found out we ran away from our dump- I mean, house. We're twins, but you wouldn't think so by looking at us. Her hair is a creamy brown wave luscious locks that flow down her tiny shoulders like a thick veil of chocolate. Mine is swept back, and is black, and always looks like it came out of a storm cloud. Her eyes are an electrifying shade of blue, mine are a soft hazel. We both share the same larger nose though. Currently I am staring up at the stars that pepper the sky. The ground is cold and hard, but I barely notice because I'm so used to it by now. My palms are rough and bloody, little shards of glass always sticking out of my crude fingertips. The chill in the air pierces my skin, though I don't feel it anymore- my face has gone numb. Meagan is out picking through the garbage for dinner. Last night it was something that I think was an old burger. Or it was a rat.... I'm not sure. Meagan turned the corner of the street, out of sight.
Anyways, I'm sure you don't want to hear me rant about our miserable little lives any more. What you really wanna hear is this:
"Go to Gate 84, September 5th, 2016. Go to Gate 84, September 5th, 2016"
What your hearing is a recorded message. We aren't exactly sure where its coming from, but it's there. It plays over and over, wherever me and Meagan go, but by now we've learned that only we hear it.
The problem is, we can't exactly obey it because... Well, no one knows what Gate 84 holds. The world is divided up into gates. We used to live in gate 70 but when my dad left we moved to the outskirts of Gate 83. I've only heard stories about gate 84, and none of them pleasant. Apparently, it's hell. That's a summary. No one who enters the place makes it out alive. It's on an island only a few hours boat ride from where we live. Whenever there's an earthquake or tsunami, the focus point is always from the Gate 84. It was as if all of the bad in the world gathered in one place. Just then, Meagan came back with a nasty cut running down the side of her cheek. I winced. Ok, maybe not all the bad in the world. The point is, we can't go to Gate 84. Or, better known as, The Midnight Zone
