~PROLOGUE~
The first voice he heard was when he was five. There was a girl named Tabitha in his kindergarten that always laughed when he did something klutzy. Sometimes, late at night when he was awake thinking, he would hear her laugh echo in his ears, and it felt like she was laying right next to him in the bed, laughing at him. He thought it was his imagination and ignored it, but the laugh kept popping up. In class, in his dreams, during recess and piano lessons, whenver he slipped up, was Tabitha's cold laugh echoing through his veins and scaring him half to death.
Tabitha and Dan were in each other's class up until the end of primary school. They hated each other. And when that drama with Lizzie happened, Dan began to not only hear her laugh, but her voice too. Calling hom stupid and saying how he would never be good enough. He was ugly, Tabitha said. He was annoying. that was why Lizzie didn't fancy him, and never would.
The insults carved themselves into his mind and every moment of everyday he could feel Tabitha's hot breath in his ear saying terrible things, even though the real Tabitha had moved to London ages ago. But Dan still had her in his mind, his Tabitha, the one who hated him and said mean things and made him want to scream. The real Tabitha (who Dan barely thought about anymore) had brought his Tabitha to life and now she was slowly eating him from the inside out.
