"Leeann Jones?"
I jolted up from my seat earning a few laughs from the rest of the class. I must've been daydreaming I thought.
"Um...present." I said feebly. "I'm present, Mrs. Goldhirch."
Mrs. Goldhirch gave me one more confused, stern look before continuing her role call. In response, I leafed through the pages of my textbook to occupy myself until the role call ended. There wasn't really much to read in it since F.E.A.R. only allowed F.E.A.R. approved reading books and textbooks. Any non F.E.A.R. approved book was confiscated and burned. Maybe I'll read after the school day ends...
I felt something hit the back of my head. Looking beside me, I saw a crumpled ball of paper. Oh no, what was it this time? I opened up the ball and saw a letter: Do you want to go out with me?, Yes or yes? Another one of those, really? I craned my neck and saw my ex Dale and his gang snickering in my direction. Sighing out of frustration, I flipped it over and wrote "Nice try jackass." While Mrs. Goldhirch wasn't looking, I crumpled the letter up again and kicked it towards Dale's direction. He picked it up and the looks on his croonies' faces showed that he got my message.
For a person who has kept their angel identity a secret for years, you would've thought that I would get out of being bullied. Sadly, this isn't the case. Humans who have angels for siblings are usually frowned upon and are considered inferior to the "pure" humans without angel genes in their bloodline. Well, at least that's how most adults (including the members of F.E.A.R.) think. What technically caused my teasing (other than my bookworm-ish qualities) is the fact that I "faint". For some weird reason, whenever I feel mad, upset, or afraid, I get this feeling of dehydration before I pass out. The other kids find it hilarious to them and made it their own personal hobby to get me as upset as possible before I succumb to my fainting spells. However, I became so immune to their abuse that I hardly ever faint as often! I turned my attention to Mrs. Golhirch just as she finished her role call.
"Ok class, today we'll be dissecting our toads in preparation for our test on Wednesday." Mrs. Goldhirch said in a monotone voice, obviously wanting the day to end much like the rest of the class. "I've already assigned you partners yesterday so if you weren't here on Thursday, come see me and I'll assign you to your partner. If you don't have any questions, then go with your partner to your lab area."
I walked over with my partner Zinnia to our lab table. Thank God I wasn't paired up with Dale or Bridget, my main bully!
"So, what's the bullying account this time?" Zinnia asked me while handing me a pair of gloves and goggles.
"Dale tried to pull the 'do you love me?' survey on me again," I said while reaching for the scalpel. "It has to be the sixth one all year and we're not into November yet!"
"Geez, some assholes just don't know when to take a hint!" Zinnia said, obviously annoyed by Dale's attempts to bully me.
Zinnia and her twin sister Sabrina were one of the very few people in my school who hung out with me. They are the "weirdos" of my school and upon discovering that I was being bullied, they took me under their wing and befriended me. Although, much like everyone else, they have no idea that I'm an angel. They thought that I was a human who didn't care about F.E.A.R. (like them) and sympathized with the angels. In fact, I'm too scared about how they would react if I told them my secret. I can't afford to loose more friends and for someone who kept their angel identity a secret for more than 15 years, I didn't want to blow it.
"Tell me about it." I replied. I briefly looked away from our toad to see Bridget yapping her mouth off about whatever gossip that has been going around to her servant of a friend who was sitting at another table. Of course, she was caught by Mrs. Goldhirch, since her mile long motor mouth can be heard from the other side of the room.
