No one knows how it started. One day, dead people started to feast on the living. It was random. No one expected it. I certainly didn't. School had been let out early, so I was home by one. So were my older brother and little sister. My parents were still at work. My mom wasn't supposed be home until five, and my dad wouldn't be home until seven. Mom never made it home. We were eating dinner at 4:45 when my dad called my brother, Austin. He said that we had to pack up non-perishable foods and other supplies, then pick him up at work. He was working at the law firm the next town over.
We wanted to know why, but he said he would explain when we picked him up. So we gathered bottled water, some non-perishable foods, clothes, toiletries, and my dad's guns, ammo, and hunting knives. That was all piled in the trunk, and I included my three favorite books, because I never go anywhere without books. I sat in the passenger seat, Leah was in the back, and Austin was driving. When we reached his law firm, he ran out. I moved to the back, Austin moved into the passenger seat, and dad climbed into the driver's seat.
As he drove, he explained a few things. Like what was going on, and why mom wasn't with us. Apparently, she had tried to call dad, but halfway through the call, there was a scream and mom didn't come back on the phone. Also, another family would be meeting us at dad's hunting cabin. The father of that family had worked at dad's firm. Once at the hunting cabin, we all put our supplies together. Since there were seven of us, the food and water wouldn't last very long. The kids also needed to learn how to fight the dead.
So, that's how my new life started.
