afraid of death - chapter four.

"Excuse me, young man?" A familiar voice called out.

"You're calling him young man?" Haigh jokes.

Parrish shakes his head, "Shut up Haigh."

I turned around, seeing it was Parrish talking and walking forward.

"I'm sorry, but you can't be here."

"Hey dumbass, you ever heard of no tresspassing?!" Haigh shouts, rolling his eyes.

Derek speaks, "This is my house."

"What do you mean kid? No one's lived here for years. Now get the hell outta here."

"Haigh, maybe a slightly gentler touch." Parrish speaks starts, "Are you alright? We can help you if something's wrong."

"What happened to my house? Where's my family? Where's my mother?"

My eyes started to burn with warm tears, but I quickly blinked them away.

"Alright kid, let's go. Now." He grabbed Derek by his arm.

Derek immediately reacted, gripping Haigh's wrist in his hand, squeezing it. I stood up, ready to protect my him from the asshole deputy.

"Hey, hey. Take it easy." Parrish calmly stated, causing Derek to loosen his grip and let go.

Angrily, Haigh pulled out his taser and tried to sneakily put it on Derek.

"Haigh, what are you - Don't! Wait! Haigh! Haigh stand down!"

Not listening, he jammed the taser into Derek's abdomen. Derek shouted, slightly convulsing.

"Haigh! Stand down!" Jordan repeated.

Unsure of what to do, my fist swung and connected with the center of the officer's face. He stumbled back, no longer tasing Derek.

"Ryleigh." Parrish speaks, knowing me from my daily stop at the police station. "You know that you just assaulted a police officer. I'm gonna have to take you in."

I only nodded, putting my hand on Derek's back to take away some of his pain. Then, I put my hands in front of me as Parrish pulled his handcuffs out. As he was putting them on me, Haigh was wiping his bloody nose and lip.

Derek and I were then thrown in the back of the police SUV, the deputies getting in the front before pulling off.

We pulled up to the police station, Parrish getting Derek out and Haigh yanking me out.

"Hey asshole." I call out to him, "Maybe you should go easy on me. You wouldn't wanna piss off the sheriff for hurting his daughter, would you?"

He immediately loosened his strong grip, making me smirk. They then brought us inside and cuffed us to the bench.

I only sighed, looking around the room for my dad. Sadly, he wasn't found.

"Why'd you hit him?" Derek asks me.

"Because he was hurting you." I respond, truthfully.

"You didn't have to do that."

I shake my head, "I don't like seeing my friends hurt. Besides, my dad will get me off the hook."

He only smiled, looking back down.

Parrish came over, kneeling down. "The other deputy thinks I'm an idiot for even asking. But I have a feeling that if I take these cuffs off, you'll be okay. And I think you'll help us figure out what happened to your family so we can get you outta here. Am I right?"
