It was starting to get colder, Winter was starting to creep in slowly as if it were waiting to jump out of nowhere and scare the hell out of the crisp autumn breeze.
I turned around to see where my little brother, Leo, peacefully slept in the dark alleyway, across from the dumpster. I always let Leo sleep in as long as he could because I could never imagine how it felt to be him, an 11 year old boy who's parents went on a trip and never came home, left him and his brother to fend themselves until the landlord came banging on the door yelling about the rent.
It didn't come as a surprise to me when that happened, I knew it was bound to happen sooner or later and I was debating on what I should do, what I could do, and it all led to one thing.
Sex.
I was able to convince him that sex was better than money and he fell for it so, there I was a 17 year old boy trying to keep himself and his brother alive and well, exchanging sex for a place to stay.
Mr. Wade was often confused with someone who'd be a competitive eater instead of a landlord, he had the body of a beanbag chair and his face was hairy, he had a lazy eye and only one ear piercing, he always had this awful smell that never seemed to go away, it lingered in the room every time he left and I shit you not when I say that.
My life nowadays is a lot less difficult than how it used to be, Leo still attends school, I don't though. I knew I had to give it all up in order to make this situation easier on Leo, I cant support him and myself anymore, so I just support him.
I sometimes wonder what people would think of me if they could read my thoughts. 'Wow Mike why don't you just go to an orphanage. C'mon you dumbass!'. I don't know how I would reply to that, I don't know if it would be based on the fact that Leo still has hope that our parents would come back to us and when they did he wanted to be with them immediately, "6 months without mom and dad, they won't leave our sides for weeks." he once said. On that day I almost lost it but I knew I had to stay calm for him.
" Mike, the bus is going to be here in a few minutes! Why didn't you wake me up?" Leo's words broke me out of my daze. I became aware of my surroundings once again and sure enough there was Leo who was scrambling to put on his shoes, the only pair he had by the way, his hair was a mess and he smelled bad. I reached into my back pocket to retrieve the Lysol bottle, if it can disinfect trash it can make me and my brother look and smell clean, right?
As soon as I finished spraying him down the bus was starting to pull up, i quickly rushed him to the bus and threw him his school bag and waved him goodbye.
I quickly hurried back to the alley were we stay in order to avoid the silent stares of disgust and pity from those passing by.
Yep nothing beats being homeless
