Chapter 2

"Sorry, but I just don't get why this is so awkward. Hey, I'm Whitney. This is River and I guess you already know Chase." Whitney said. She was beautiful with shoulder-length blonde hair, piercing blue eyes and a friendly smile. She put out her hand for me to shake it and I tentatively accepted.

"Well I'm Kennedy. I did a shift at the bakery and met bakery boy over here. I don't know you, River, but I'm guessing it's your little brother I'm babysitting right now." I said, and Whitney smiled. Chase and River still hadn't said anything, but their facial expressions said enough. "Well then. Thanks for returning, I'll be on my way."

"We have a party, I'm not staying," River said blankly.

"Ah, he talks. Well I'm not gonna stay here while you guys have fun." I said. The bitchy side of me always comes out eventually. I mean, I was nice for a bit.

"Hey! We were having fun!" I hear Noah shout from the living room.

Chase gave River a mischevous look and then said "come to the party with us."

"Chase? What about Noah?"

"You said that Wesley would be back before we got here, so he should be here soon. We'd also have to wait for our bakery girl here to get ready and that could take forever." Chase said and laughed.

"I only live next door, bakery boy."

"Wait, you know Mia?" River asked.

"She's my Aunt. And she was supposed to be babysitting Noah but I ended up here. Well I guess I've got to go and take forever getting ready. Whitney, you wanna come?" I said, eager to make an interesting friend in this small town.

"Sure, see ya boys." She said, and we walked to Mia's place.

I unlocked the door with my key and we walked up to my room. It was kind of cool having a key to someone's house. Me not having a key in the OC gave my mother even more control over me. I couldn't run home if I didn't want to be at a charity event or a club meeting. She suffocated me, and despite the smallness of this town, I felt free to breathe here.

Even so, despite me not being able to go home, I could literally go anywhere else, so the suffocation backfired.

"How long have you known River and Chase?" I ask, and Whitney giggles, sensing my real question. She sat on my queen sized bed with cream sheets and took a deep breath.

"I'm not involved with either of them like that, I've known them forever. So much so that I can already tell that Chase is really into you, and can tell that I'll never be in to River or Chase." She said, and I rolled my eyes.

"I bet he flirts with everyone like that."

"He does. But the way that he couldn't form a sentence when he saw you shows that this is something different." She said.

"You think so?" I said, holding various dresses over my body and looking in the mirror.

"I know so. And wear the red one. It will make you stand out." She said.

"You can borrow something if you want, you know," I said, putting a black dress and then a blue dress on the floor.

"I was waiting for you to ask. Hand me the black one, its gorgeous!" she replied, taking the black dress from my hand in glee.

I put on a figure-hugging red dress that really made me look good. It was a crimson red colour, with a sweetheart neckline with straps. I suddenly was feeling the repercussions of eating so much pizza in the tight dress.
