Adult 64's voice only just reached my ears from this distance "Run wild my children! Let the scents guide you, be free- be fearless!" She was turning into a preacher in her old age. I shook my head silently.
I was an easy mile in front of the rest of my class but I still wanted more speed. Maybe Adult 64 was getting to me- scary thought. Kicking off my shoes I let my feet sink into the soil bed of the forest and shrugged my jacket off. Then I was running again, faster than before. My feet barely touched down before I was four paces ahead, my thighs pushing themselves to exertion, my light hair whipped backwards out of my face and my blood was pumping scarily fast. I had never run like this before, it felt like if I pushed just a little more then maybe just maybe I would take off into the dark night sky and never return to the anchors of gravity.
As I ran the trees pressed in from all angles, but I was not worried- I was thoroughly enjoying myself winding and dancing gracefully in and out of the trees as I went.
Mid-leap I dropped to the ground on all fours, I had smelt something amazing. Just a scent on the breeze but it caught my attention none the less, it smelt like honey, sunshine and blooming flowers all rolled together in one smell to gently caress the senses. Instinctively I set off in that direction, letting the scents guide me- adult 64 would have been proud.
The smell became stronger and I started to flat out sprint. The demon blood in me pumping through my veins meant I could get up to speeds of nearly 60mph. It filled the air I breathed, it was intoxicating, I could almost feel the source of the scent- almost taste it.
At that moment it hit. Nothing could have prepared me for it. An excruciating pain came to me- it felt like my teeth were being ripped out of their gums one by one, like every muscle in my body was being stretched and squashed simultaneously. I stopped dead in my tracks and my knees crumpled underneath me. There was nothing but the pain, no sights, no smells. My eyes started to burn, and then they roared like someone had stuck a burning hot iron rod through my eye-lids. I knew I was writhing on the floor but I couldn't feel the movement. Agonising screams were being ripped out of my throat.
I screamed again and again until I felt a hand under my back. It scooped me up and I was in a cool embrace, soothing against my burning skin. My feet were off the ground, my body held up by their arms, my head tucked under someone's chin and calming whispers found their way to my ears. But they didn't work, the pain had taken over my body, my thinking, it ran through my veins, coursed through my body- I was helpless to its whims. The whispers suddenly stopped and the person who's arms I was resting in tensed. Then I felt myself begin to slip from their hold and I hit the hard forest floor with a gasp. My eyes snapped opened to the sound of footsteps running away from me. The whole world was covered by an orange haze and in the distance I saw a tall figure retreating through the trees. They ran out of my line of vision and blackness soon swarmed in on me as I lost consciousness.
