The Teen girl dorm was massive with winding corridors and four very squished girls behind each door. Me and Fi were making our way quickly to the Grub hall. Everything including Fifi was efficient, she never did anything without purpose. I was way too tired to make conversation, and obviously Fi felt the same way so we arrived there at 6:35, just as they were putting the food out. We simultaneously moved towards the coffee maker- coffee always comes first- and I grabbed myself an extra large cup before grabbing a tray. I picked an indistinguishable lump of meat which, from the smell of it was mountain lion over the iffy looking deer meat, and went to sit at our usual table.
Me and Fi were the only ones in the Grub hall so far. I took a big sip of my coffee and when Fi sat next to me we compared timetables and teachers for this year. We all had the same lessons we'd been having since we'd become Teens when we were thirteen, just at increasingly advanced levels. My day looked like this:
Animal Studies 8:00-9:30
Tracking and Methods 9:30-11:30
Chosen Hobby 11:30-12:30
Lunch 12:30-13:00
Weapons Class 1:00-3:00
Combat Class 3:00-5:00
"Hey I'm in Weapons with you" said Fi.
"Awesome" I said with a smile, "But its with Adult 45."
"Ugh, I haven’t had her since my first Teen year."
"We'll get through it together!" i said acting all dramatic and emotional, making her laugh. The mountain lion was overcooked as usual but apart from that didn't taste too bad. I saw Fliss's unmistakable strawberry blonde spikes over the crowd. She came rushing over from the breakfast line with Sephy in tow,
“Did you see them?!” she whispered in a scandalised tone banging her tray down on the table and taking a huge bite of the iffy deer meat and chewing ferociously.
“What is she talking about?” I asked, me and Fi both turning to Sephy.
“438's over there with Tina” she said nodding over our heads. I swivelled in my seat to see Teen 438 (Fliss's very recent ex) spoon feeding chunks of food to Tina- another self adopted name. Turning back around I saw Fliss who practically vibrating she was so angry.
That jerk! He had broken up with her for no reason only two days ago at a party in front of everyone. He couldn't do this to her.
“Don't worry about it Fliss” I said patting her hand before getting up and carrying my empty tray over to the bins which just happened to be right behind where Teen 438 and Tina were sitting. After dumping my tray I leaned over Tina's shoulder and, pitching my voice low and husky in my best impression of Demi Moore, whispered,
“Better run little girl- he's mine.” She let out a yelp when she saw it was me and quickly ran off, not looking backwards once at Teen 438. She was one of the ones that was scared of me- thought I was cursed because of my name. Annoying as hell sometimes but it could also be useful- he wouldn't be hearing from her again. I let out my best bitch laugh, smiled sweetly at 438 and walked back to my table with a slight sway in my hips.
When I got near Fliss jumped up and gave me a hug, I grinned and hugged her back before sitting back down. Fifi just looked at me with disapproval, i looked at her innocently and said,
"What? I was just emptying my tray," causing Sephy and Fliss to crack up laughing. She just shook her head and went back to eating. A sharp whistle from the front of the hall pulled everyone's attention to Head 79 (some high up adults had titles instead of just 'adult') and the hall went silent. She glanced around to make sure she has everyone's attention before saying,
“Welcome back students, this is a message for the fifth year teens only. This is a momentous day for you. Today is the day of the change- for today you will have your first hunt!” The fifth years erupted in cheers and excited conversation broke out all over the room. I couldn't believe it. We were finally going to go through the change- we had heard so much about it. Your first hunt is when your inner demon comes out for the first time, and it leaves its imprint on your body- we call this the change. It can affect everyone differently. You have no guarantees on what you'll look like after apart from the orange eyes and pointed teeth which everyone got. They say its your demon showing itself through you and the more you let it in the more orange your eyes became.
Coming back from my thoughts I heard her carry on,
“In light of this event classes will not be running today for the fifth years as it takes a long time to get to the hunting site you will be using. We leave in one hour- meet by the border. Good day.” And with that she turned and left the room.
