*drip, drip* I wake to the leaky faucet. Damn that thing I fix it every day and yet here we are. We live in these little shacks they call our home. I glance at the clock and see it's only 5 am. That gives me some time to get Katie, Dylan, Cory, and Jacob up for work. Katie has to be ready at 8:00 for when Mrs. Westley comes and picks her up. You see schooling is not an option here. The boys go work out in the cotton fields and Katie is a maid and stays for weeks at a time.
Cory stumbles out of the "bedroom" and comes and sits next to me. He glances over and gives me a quiet "morning" and he is off to fetch water. I get up and slide on my shirt then my overalls. Cory comes back and is boiling the water.
"Cory, can you wake the others after I go." "Sure Blake"
I finish getting ready and out the door I go to the field where I wait for old Bucky to come pick me up along with the other men to work.**********************************************************************
