~Flashback~
23 years earlier little markimoo was having his fourth birthday party. Another birthday without his father. Though mark was filled with disappointment he made the best of a bad day. As the day was drawing to a close and the friends that weren't staying went home mark found himself having the best surprise ever....
The day began like any other. Mark woke up got out of bed and went to go brush his teeth before going to eat breakfast. He walked down the creaky stairs and slumped down on a dining chair. His mum happily making breakfast and humming a happy tune. His mum delivered his breakfast to him. A stack of pancakes with sweet sticky syrup poured perfectly on top drizzling down the sides hitting every pancake. His mum went to turn around and go back to the stove. Mark didn't understand why she was so happy. His dad wasn't there again. He promised he would be this time. But he let poor little mark down again. Yet his mom is happy. Why? She asked him " Are you okay my big boy?" Mark shakes his head. "What's wrong sweetheart?" Marks lip began to tremble and tears were glistening in his eyes. "Where's dad??" He asked. This was a phrase marks mum had heard one too many times. And it killed her to not tell her son what she knew. But she couldn't ruin the surprise and she knew that in the end it would all be worth it in the end. But for now she had to keep her lips sealed. "Sweetie you know where he is, he's off protecting us and the country. He is keeping all the bad people out of here." "B-b-but wh-h-hy can't he see me just for today? I miss him and it's my birthday and he promised me." Mark began to sob. He sobbed so hard that his breath kept hitching and his cries shook his entire body. She didn't know what to do. In her head she knew couldn't tell him. Bringing him into her embrace his mum gently begin to stroke his hair in attempt to calm him down. In time his breathing became laboured, the shivering stopped and his stopped falling. Mark sat up and looked at me, eyes puffy from crying but still the gorgeous brown they have always been. "Wanna help me put up the decorations for your party?" Mark shook his head. Little does he know what surprise awaits him. "Come on sweetie, you can't let your guests down and hey you never know what surprises you are going to get today" She finished my motherly speech and tried to get him moving. He complied and asked" what do we have to do first?" With a slight smile. By the time they had finished preparing the house and the garden it was late afternoon and guests had just started arriving. Only a few people were invited nothing too fancy or too big. Mark came down after having a bath in jeans and a plaid shirt. He looked like a heartbreaker. Everything went as planned and at 8:00 marks surprise would arrive. Now that's just 5 minutes away. As if on cue I heard a small click as our gate opened. Mark didn't pay it much attention until he gave it a closer look. He realised who it was and bounded towards him. Marks dad had walked through gate and was standing there arms open. He knelt down to pick mark up and the sound of cheering filled the air. Mark was crying but this time they were tears of happiness. He couldn't contain it. He became a blubbering mess all over again. Marks mum chuckled slightly at the sight. She knew mark would never forget this day.
