(Day 1)
I’m screwed! I thought to myself as I rounded the corner in search for a hiding place. Their footsteps were swift, taunting my every move, as if saying, there’s no where to hide; might as well just give in. I sprinted into the janitor’s closet, locked the door, moved a desk behind it, and sat on top of the vacant desk.
“Come on freak, open up!” I knew that horrifying voice all too well: Calum Hood’s. Calum seemed like your cliche popular boy, but he’s nothing like them. This young man had chocolate hair with auburn eyes to match. He’s very tall and a bit meaty. He was so twisted, in the most grotesque way, that if his pretty face were stripped from him; all that would be left would be a disgusting boy with no morals. That was all Calum had, a pretty face that girls my age would do just about anything for.
All I was trying to do this school year, was get by. I was in eighth grade and this was my last year before high school. All I really wanted to do was get out of here and start over in a new school. The old Maddie will stay here in the hallways, like a ghost. While the new one will move onto high school, as a new person.
I heard a second voice, another boy’s, but this time with a gruff tone. It was another popular, Lance Hinton. “ We know you’re in there freak; open the door, and we won’t ruin you too badly!” Lance chuckled as if this was all a joke, and I was the one who didn’t get it. His threat started to sink into me, and I was so shocked at his words that I let out a breath I did not even know I was holding in. The gruff voices on the other side of the door became dead silent. My heart seemed to be beating so quickly I was afraid that it would burst. I knew something was going on on the other side of the thin wooden door. After what seemed like an hour of being trapped in the janitor’s closet, I stepped outside to find that they had fled. They must’ve gotten bored and went on to ruin another kids day. “Phew, I’m safe,” I quietly whispered to myself, even though it was a whisper, I was afraid the whole school would hear me. I had already missed the bus home due to the encounter with Lance and Calum, therefore I walked.
Mom and Dad weren’t home yet; they must have still been at work. I walked over to the fridge to find a note:
Working late tonight sweetie. Make sure to eat dinner before you start your homework.
-Love Mom and Dad
Looks like another boring night alone. I pondered this a bit, and then decided to eat a snack. I walked upstairs and slipped into my bedroom. The first thing I did was turn on my music as loud as I wanted; no one was home except for me, so who would care? I heard the muffled sound of my phone buzzing in my backpack so, I retrieved it but realized it wasn’t even ringing. I must’ve imagined it, I thought. Quickly, I threw my thick brown hair into a messy bun, to get it out of my face. Afterwards, I started on my boring homework. I cursed at the sheer thought of having to do a ton of complicated algebra problems.
I swear my phone’s going off, I hear it! I thought to myself. I ran to my bed where my phone was and looked at the screen. “I knew I wasn’t crazy!” I had received a text from my mom, asking me if I was doing okay. Once I finished texting her back, I hopped into bed and went to sleep. But of course, “going to sleep” meant sitting in bed with random thoughts that kept me awake for at least another hour.
