                  Ch.1 She's Gone

No, no, no, this couldn't happen. Why did I ever think I was so lucky? But like they say the worst things happen to the best. I ran my heart pounding, my arms pumping I ran to anything. She's gone I thought. She's really gone. Why did I have to get this news on my birthday, why couldn't they have given it to me next week or even next month or even tell me at all! I didn't understand. I ran until I got lost in the thick brush. I hadn't even realized with all the adrenaline that I cut myself on the rosebushes and the glass that I had broken.

Amanda really is gone.

And it was all because of some drunk driver. He should be in jail, I thought. For the rest of his life! How could he ever do such a thing? She couldn't even drive herself! He ran into the back of them smashing her in between the seats, until she couldn't breathe and she was trapped. He kept ramming in the back in the car thinking that it would go forward more. That's when the window broke. The glass shattered and it cut her like you wouldn't even believe. She didn't even look human anymore. I say by her hospital bed after the incident and cried. I knew she shouldn't have gone, she should've stayed home. We could've lived. She should've gone to school that day but instead she'd be buried. Her family was grieving but I was the worst. I didn't come out of my room for a week, only to eat. Then when they open the door at night for the cats that's when I snuck out. I ran and ran. I couldn't Itake it seriously she'd never be around anymore. My best friend was gone.

That's when I saw it.

I blinked a few times to make sure I was in reality. It was HUGE! Almost like a lizard with claws, and wings. It was a scaly creature with horns sticking out of its forehead. I slowed down to a stop, trying not to draw attention to myself. I hid behind a maple tree with honey colored leaves, the sunset casting rays through it almost so it was transparent. The other trees were losing leaves and still some were green. The soft pitter patter of the leaves floating down to the soft bed of others was calming. I realized I had been holding my breath so I slowly exhaled. I looked around and saw that all that was around was trees taller than average. The foliage was thick and I had no idea where I had come from.

Even though this was a magical place I knew I had to leave.

The creature put its snout up in the air and immediately I knew I was in trouble. The creature was slowly approaching the tree and I could feel the warm breath swooshing against me like my favorite blanket enfolding me. I inched closer to keep warm. It was after all getting dark out and the temperatures were dropping. I slowly slumped down the tree until I was sitting. I closed my eyes and just before I fell asleep, I heard someone or maybe someone say, "It works every time."
