The gray tabby queen sat up underneath the bush and washed the soot and smoke from her fur while her small black kit slept at her paws. We can't stay here she thought. The queen squeezed her way out of the bush and wandered off to hunt leaving the newborn kit alone under the bush.
The small kit wakes up not long after and sniffs around for her mother. She begins wailing for her mother, hungry and frightened. She wiggles herself out of the bush, her eyes still closed, and crawls away slowly. She mewls for her mother and continues onward smelling cat scent but not knowing if it was her mother or not. A few moments later she collides into something thin and soft and lifts her head. "Mama?" she asks. A gruff laughing voice answers, "I would hope not, little kit." He scoops her up and she feels herself being turned around. She mewls desperately for her mother.
As if the call had summoned her the kit hears her mother's growl, "put my kit down, now." She was set back down on the ground and scooped away by her mother's paw. She nuzzles into her smelling her familiar scent. "Who are you?" the gray tabby queen asks forcefully, "and why did you have my kit?"
"I apologize, your kit was wandering and about to fall into a pit so i picked her up. I am Thistlestar. What is your name? Why are you out here alone with a young kit?" He asks curiously looking at them. "Shouldn't you be in a nursery?"
The gray tabby queen growls "you ask too many questions at once. I am Creamtail and this is Ravenkit. Our home... burned in the fire last night." She stops trying to compose herself as the grief threatens to overwhelm her.
Thistlestar nods and seems to make up his mind. "You will come with me to my clan, and you and your kit will be welcome in the nursery. Eat anything you like from the fresh kill pile." He walks away and Ravenkit feels herself being lifted up as Creamtail pads after the tom following to the camp.
