"The pokeball is somewhere over here by the sign," Wendell said, staring at her phone as she walked towards the sign at the entrance to the college campus.
Except for the four walking towards the main road, everyone attending Hallie's party was back taking pictures in the middle of the green expanse of lawn. Wendell, Deirdre, and Elsie decided to walk the short distance for the benefit of their Pokemon Go score. Marilyn, not a fan of that game whatsoever, was just tagging along for the walk.
As they neared the sign, they noticed that there was some construction happening, made apparent by the bulldozer tracks in the mud and building equipment strewn across some of the grass. Wendell and Marilyn noticed, disconnected and laying on its side underneath a nearby tree, there was a lamppost.
"Woah cool!" said Marilyn, having never seen one on the ground before.
"Should we tip it back up?" Wendell asked. She had a kind sympathy for everything in the world, and offered to put the lamppost upright as if it was an injured animal.
"No, it's disconnected because of the construction. Here, let me take your picture with it though!" Marilyn said, getting out her phone.
As Wendell sat down on the long side of the lamppost, she felt different. It wasn't immediately obvious to her what powers she was harnessing, but she could sense that this unlit, unplugged lamppost had an electricity all of its own running through it. She didn't say anything to Marilyn, and after taking a few pictures, they returned to the rest of the group.
But the lamppost had already illuminated an adventurous curiosity in Wendell that had been dark for far too long.
