I am living proof of a race unknown to humans.

Let me get this straight, technically we, Polocens, are humans, but for some reason we are different. We have the ability to change from animal to human and vice versa. My generation has never shifted though. The leader of our herd says there is no need for it since we were cast out of the humans' land.
My grandmother once told me stories of our kind living in harmony with the humans. We worked together and created a beautiful, peaceful world. As of now, that time has changed. Iv'e always wanted to experience that time though... To have seen everyone in that joyful era.
Grandmother never mentioned why the world is like this now. Although maybe, she simply doesn't know. I still think she does, but I don't know why she would keep it from everyone.

Now, let me tell you about my herd. My grandmother is the oldest and wisest of our herd, my father died in a brutal fight with another shifter, (yes there are different shifters. As far as we know there are animal, bird, and fish shifters. No insect or mythological creature has been seen or heard of yet), and my mother is... Well, she used to be the fastest one in our herd until dad died. Ever since then, she hasn't been herself.
Unfortunately, I didnt have any siblings. My mother said I was born with a pure black coat with a white teardrop streak on my nose. Sometimes I would stay up at night to watch the moon reflect a silvery purple glow off my mane. Mother always said it was magic when I was a filly. I believed everything then.

Anyways, I'm a young mare now. Wild and free as a horse could be. My mother used to say that I inherited her ability of speed. I never thought she was being serious until I almost ran my tail off while being chased by a panther. That, by the way, is how my dad died. He died protecting me. The panther didn't know that we were shifters, she was just trying to feed her family. He bravely stepped in and saved my life, and I can never forget the look he gave me when he told me to run.
Living fatherless was difficult, but we managed. Mother taught me how to run faster, how to smell the air for water, and how to find the best patches of grass. She also taught me how to make friends too. I suppose I wasn't very good at it because I only made one true friend. Her name was Evelyn. Oh! Woops.. I forgot to mention my name! It's Audrey. My mother was Charlotte the Palomino and my father was Raycon the Andalusian. Cool huh?

Well, Evelyn and I grew up together. We played all day long in the meadows and watched the stars in the night. I had a pretty normal childhood for a horse. We are about 16 years now by human time (A shifter's life span goes by human years, no matter what animal we are). Rambunctious, definitely.. But dangerous and stupid? Nah.. That job belongs to the colts.
Despite what you think, growing up as a mare isn't as boring as it seems. I can guarantee it wasn't for me, but maybe that's just because I was a Polocen.
