"I warn you, child... if I lose my temper, you lose your head! Understand?"
-The Queen of Hearts, (Alice in Wonderland 1951)
The girl sat up in the bed, her eyes locked on the door as two figures appeared on the other side. Her fingers clenched into the sheets and she desperately wished she had some kind of weapon. She felt completely exposed and vulnerable in the empty white room. She had no idea who was about to come through that door but based off of what Chester had told her, she was pretty sure she wasn't going to like them.
The door swung open and a man and a woman walked in. The middle aged man was tall and muscular with shocking blue eyes and hair so blonde that it was nearly white. He was dressed in a simple security guard uniform with an electric baton and handcuffs attached to his belt. He carried a stool in with him, which he sat in front of the bed before returning to stand by the door with crossed arms.
The woman was much younger than him, looking maybe in her late twenties or early thirties. She was very beautiful with her fiery red hair and stunning blue eyes that peered at the girl from behind a pair of black framed glasses. She was dressed in a grey dress and a long white lab coat, a yellow file folder clutched in her hand. Her black heels clicked against the tiled floor as she entered the room, sitting in the stool that the man had brought in. Her smile was dangerous as she greeted, "Hello. I'm Dr. Hart. I'm sure you must be very scared and confused right now."
"That's an understatement." the girl grumbled, eyeing the woman suspiciously. "Why can't I remember anything?"
"You experienced a psychotic break which left you catatonic for several weeks. Your family admitted you here so we could help you." Dr. Hart lied and very poorly too. The girl narrowed her eyes.
"You didn't answer my question."
"Its not uncommon to experience some memory loss after such a traumatic event." Dr. Hart continued nonchalantly, ignoring her. The girl clenched her fists. It was the same story that Chester had told her.
"So is that why nobody here can remember anything? We all suffered from the exact same psychotic break? Isn't that convenient for you." she challenged with crossed arms, taking the doctor by surprise.
"I see you've been talking to Chester." she quickly collected herself, smoothing out the slightly ruffled hem of her dress. "You shouldn't believe a word he says. He's a deluded young man and a pathological liar."
"I heard that, you psychotic bitch!" Chester called out from his room. Dr. Hart glared in the direction of his voice and gave the security guard a sharp nod. He returned it and slipped back out into the hallway. The girl waited with wide eyes as a nearby door opened and closed. Footsteps echoed in the next door room and Chester fearfully pleaded, "No! Please, don't! I take it back! I'm sorry!"
The girl winced at the sickening sound of crackling electricity and Chester screaming in pain. The baton buzzed again and the boy cried out once more. Resisting the urge to throw up, the girl begged with tears in her eyes, "Please, stop!"
With a twisted smile, Dr. Hart called out, "That will do, Whit." A brief moment later, the door opened and the guard, Whit, stepped back in. "As you can see, those who misbehave are punished accordingly. I suggest you choose your friends more carefully, Dinah."
"Dinah?" she repeated slowly. It didn't sound right. It felt unnatural on her tongue.
"That's your name." Dr. Hart told her, rising to her feet. Whit stepped forward and took the stool.
"I don't believe you." she replied defiantly. Dr. Hart shrugged as she reached the door, looking back over her shoulder with cold, piercing eyes.
"Believe what you want but you'll only make things harder for you." she threatened, stepping out of the room. "Dinner's in an hour."
The door slammed shut and the girl, Dinah, was left alone. As soon as Dr. Hart and Whit were out of sight, she leaped from the bed and crouched in front of the vent, softly calling out, "Chester, are you okay?"
"I'm a bit fried but I'll live." he moaned sluggishly. Dinah let out a sigh of relief and leaned against the wall. "You'd think I'd learn to keep my mouth shut by now."
"She's crazy." she muttered, her head falling forward.
"That she is, love." he quickly corrected, "Dinah, sorry. A deal's a deal."
"No, its okay." she shook her head. She didn't like the name Hart had given her. "I think I prefer 'love'."
"Alright then." she could hear the smirk in Chester's voice. "Love it is."
